“Mark will come around. You’ll see.”

“No! Not him!”

Her eyes furrow with confusion.

“Jonathan!” I croak. “I’ve never seen him so mad. I panicked.”

“Jonathan will cool off. He can’t stay mad at you.”

“I don’t know. I broke the cardinal rule.” I gasp for air. “Then lied about it all while being caught red-handed.”

My phone buzzes, and I race to take it out of my pocket.

Mark: Don’t worry about it.

“Who is it?” Ashleigh asks.

I show her the screen.

My hands are shaking as I type back.

Millie: Can we talk? Please.

Mark: I don’t know if that’s a good idea.

Mark: You told me the other night that we weren’t a good idea. I didn’t get why until yesterday.

NO. NO. NO. This isn’t what I want!

Millie: Don’t shut me out. Talk to me.

Millie: Please

Mark: What is there to say? You were right. Anything between us is complicated and impacts our entire families. It’s not just us. It’s our whole family involved from the get-go.

Mark: I can’t–I won’t–hurt Jon like that.

My heart shatters. How have we gone in such a polar opposite direction than we were headed yesterday? I drop my phone in my lap and start crying all over again.

Ashleigh rubs my back some more. “Give him some time.”

I shake my head. “I think he made it perfectly clear where he stands.”

She swats the air. “Oh, he doesn’t know what he’s talking about. I’ve never seen Mark like this. He’s in completely uncharted territory. He’s never felt for anyone what he feels for you.”

I gape at her. “How would you know?”

“Because last night he looked as miserable as you do.” I stare at her. “Did I not mention Mark came over for dinner last night?”

Her eyes dance. What is she talking about, and why has she just let me sit here crying my eyes out when she had information?

I sit up straight.

“No,” I say, the tears instantly dried. Now I’m just annoyed at the pregnant woman sitting next to me. “It must have slipped your mind.”

“Huh? I could have sworn I mentioned it.”

“If you weren’t pregnant, I’d pummel you.”
