Ashleigh: Danny’s really worried. Text him first.

Danny: AMELIA JEAN ANSWER YOUR DANG PHONE

Millie: Sorry! I slept in and I forgot to charge my phone.

Danny: You about gave me a heart attack!

Millie: Sorry! I didn’t mean to worry you.

Danny: I’m just glad you’re okay.

Millie: I’m fine. I promise. I just slept in.

Millie: Sorry about earlier, cool if I come by?

Ashleigh: Come on over. Girls just went down for a nap.

I take a quick inventory of my appearance. I better change. If my brother caught sight of me looking like this, he would pop a gasket. If it was anyone else, I would be annoyed, but not with Danny. He’s always just wanted the best for the rest of us siblings. He really is the greatest big brother. Ashleigh is amazing as well. If anyone knows how to help my current predicament, it will be them. And heaven knows I need some perspective. I change into something more outside-world-appropriate and head out the door.

When I get in my car, I send a quick message before pulling out of my driveway.

Millie: I’m so sorry about yesterday. Can we talk?

When I pull up to Danny and Ashleigh’s, I almost expect Danny’s car to be in the driveway, but it’s only the van. Ashleigh is sitting on the porch waiting for me as if she knows I need to talk.

“Hey, stranger.”

“Hey,” I say, defeated. I’m still drained from the lack of sleep and the overwhelming feelings of confusion that have taken over my soul.

Ashleigh gives me a once-over. “You look awful.”

From anyone else that would feel like an insult, but I know Ashleigh means well, and frankly, it’s true.

“Well, I feel awful.”

“I’m just guessing, but Mark?”

I nod.

She motions towards the porch swing, “Come on, tell me all about it.”

“So, he just got up and left?”

I nod. Tears are stinging my eyes. “He looked so hurt, Ash. And now he’s not answering my messages. I think I really messed up.”

“Maybe he hasn’t seen your message yet.”

“Maybe? I don’t know. I think I really hurt him.”

She grabs my hand and gives it a squeeze. It’s the straw that breaks the camel’s back. It’s a deluge of tears. I’m full-on ugly crying. Just call me Tobey McGuire in Spiderman. It ain’t pretty.

Ashleigh rubs my back. “Oh, Mills, you really like him.”

“Yes,” I croak out between sobs. “And—and now I’ve messed up everything.”

“You don’t know that.”

“You didn’t see his face. He was so mad.”
