There were butterflies in my stomach. “Are you seriously asking me out?”

“Is that a problem?”

“No, no. I’m flattered, it’s just…”

“Ah, you’ve got a husband.” He looked genuinely disappointed.

“No husband,” I assured.

“Boyfriend?”

I shook my head, chuckling. “No, no boyfriend either.”

Adam grinned, almost immediately in better spirits. “So, you’re free then?”

My cheeks burned even hotter, and I finally took my hand back. “It’s just that I came to walk out with a job, not a date. Sorry.”

“No need to apologize. Can’t blame a guy for shooting his shot, right?” Adam rose, offering me a glimpse of his strong back and perfect ass.

Damn, he looks good in that suit.

“Alright,” he continued, taking a quick glance at his expensive watch. “It was fun chatting with you, Sam, but I guess it’s time to get this show on the road.”

I peered up at him, curious.

Adam clapped his hands, capturing the attention of everyone in the reception area. “You’re all dismissed. The position’s been filled. Miss Lindale, please follow me.”

The other job applicants all shot him a confused look, some of them murmuring curses under their breaths. I was stunned.

“What’s going on?” I asked.

Adam flashed me a devilishly handsome smile. “Allow me to start over. My name’s Adam McPaulson. I’m one of your interviewers.”

Adam

When I was a little boy, my grandfather used to tell me that angels walked amongst us. They were exceedingly rare, but when you laid eyes on one, you’d know without a shadow of a doubt.

Samina Lindale.

She had to be an angel. How else could I explain her breathtaking beauty? She had long brunette hair done up in a modest bun, loose strands framing her petite face. Sam had full, pouty lips that made her smile bubbly and bright. And her eyes… Holy shit, her eyes were like liquid gold. Hazel in most lighting, but when I first ran into her in the bathroom, they glimmered with a jaw-dropping brilliance that I’d never seen before.

“So…” she said slowly. “What was with all the theatrics?”

She was seated across from me in a wide office chair. Sam was poised, effortlessly elegant. I couldn’t wait for the guys to meet her. She was a perfect match for Duchess Arianna De Aguente. Sam seemed like she was down to Earth, easy to get along with.

They’re going to love her.

“I wanted to weed out the duds,” I explained simply. “People are rarely genuine in an interview setting. This job requires a great deal of collaboration and teamwork. I like to know that whoever we bring onto the team is someone that is agreeable. Nice around the clock, not just when they think it’ll help their case.”

“And you think that someone is me?”

Her voice was sweet and warm like a violin, playing musically in my ear. My throat was dry. I fought against impulse, choosing to ignore the flask I had hidden away in my suit jacket’s inner pocket to drink her in instead.

“I’m leaning in that general direction, yes.”

“So, you’re the head of Grand Paradise Security?”
