“I wouldn’t dream of it.”

“I want to go back to college,” I explained softly. “I had to take some time off to take care of a loved one, and now… I’m hoping this job will help me open a couple of doors. I guess you could say I’m in it for the money.”

“That’s honest. I like that.”

I sighed. “The signing bonus alone would help me pay off half of my first year at law school. That is, if I get in. I still have to take my LSAT.”

He arched his thick brows. “Law school?” he echoed, amused. “Sorry, you just don’t strike me as the type.”

“There’s a type?”

“You’re too…” He gestured vaguely with a hand. “Well, you seem way too fucking sweet to be a lawyer.”

A giggle escaped past my lips. “I don’t think being nice disqualifies me from joining the bar.”

“Very true.”

“Since we’re being honest, though, I almost didn’t accept the interview.”

“Why not?”

I shrugged. “The job ad was kind of weird. There was next to no details about the actual responsibilities. They listed salary, benefits, and signing bonus… but then it said that more details would be provided upon hiring. Plus, they’re paying way too much if all they’re after is a personal assistant. I think there’s more going on here, but I haven’t quite figured it out yet.”

“Beautiful, ambitious, andsharp,” he murmured. “Color me impressed.”

I laughed softly. “Such a charmer.”

“Well, if I were you, I wouldn’t worry about it too much. I’ve worked for this company for years. They take good care of their employees. We handle a lot of sensitive information, so that’s the reason for all the secrecy.”

“Are you sure it’s nothing nefarious?”

“I’m sure. You have nothing to worry about.”

“What is it that you do here exactly?”

He shrugged a muscular shoulder and grinned. “This and that.”

“Wow. Could you be any more vague?”

“The name’s Adam, by the way.” He held his hand out. It was hard not to marvel at the sheer size of his palm, the length and thickness of his calloused fingers. He encased my much smaller hand with his.

“Sam Lindale,” I said.

“I’ll venture a guess and say that’s short for Samantha?”

I shook my head. “A common answer, but no. It’s short for Samina.”

“Makes sense.”

“What does?”

“That someone so beautiful would have a beautiful name to match.”

It took a lot to get me to blush, and yet here I was, warmth pooling in my cheeks. There was something in the way that Adam looked at me that sent a shiver up my spine. His forest eyes were dreamy, the hard line of his jaw and rough stubble sexy as sin. The air around us was electric, buzzing with an energy that I couldn’t quite put to words.

My heart skipped a beat when I realized he hadn’t let go of my hand yet. I couldn’t bring myself to pull away, too intoxicated by the scent of his sandalwood cologne.

“What are your plans after this?” he asked. “We could grab a drink.”
