I shook my head. “Second-in-command, technically. But Kris is out right now gathering intel, so I’m running things until he gets back. He should be here pretty soon.”

“Why’d you make us all wait for so long?”

“Again, weeding out the duds. I’m looking for a candidate who’s patient. Someone who can keep a cool head no matter what situation they find themselves in. It’s as you said, we provide security detail to some of the most rich and powerful. There’s a surprising amount of waiting around in our line of work, so I needed to see who could naturally make the cut.”

Sam tilted her head to one side, observing me with an amused smirk. “A little unorthodox, but I can see the value in it.”

“I’m glad you see it that way.”

There was a knock at the door. Liam and Charlie walked in with purpose, making their way over. I didn’t miss the way they paused to take a good look at Sam.

“This her?” Liam asked, gruff as always.

I nodded. “Sam, this is Liam Barber.”

She rose from her seat, coming up to Liam’s chest. She stuck her hand out to shake. “Pleasure to meet you.”

Liam could only stare at her, too intense for his own good. I loved him like a brother butfuckhe could be awkward sometimes. I couldn’t blame him, though. Sam was a work of art. Even I was stunned into silence when I first met her.

Sam smiled sweetly, peering up at him. “Um… Are you okay?”

Charlie cleared his throat, swooping in to save the day. He was the one who ended up shaking her hand. “Don’t mind him. He’s very happy to meet you, too.”

“Are you sure? I think I might have scared him.”

Charlie chuckled. “He’s always like this, don’t worry.” He brought her hand up to his lips and graciously kissed the back of her knuckles. “Charlie Vorano, at your service.”

Sam’s breath hitched slightly. “Nice to meet you.”

“Is Kris still not back yet?” Liam asked flatly.

“He texted me earlier,” I explained. “ETA twenty minutes. You know how it is.”

“I guess there’s no harm in starting without him,” Charlie said. “What has Adam told you about the job so far, Sam?”

She sat back down, shrugging a shoulder. “Not a whole lot. I’d love to know what all the secrecy is about.”

I leaned against the edge of the desk. “You hit the nail on the head out there,” I started. “We’re not looking for a personal assistant, but a body double.”

“A body double?”

“We have a high value client who’s ruffled a few feathers. She’s going to be making a very important business trip in a few weeks. We’ve determined that there’s a chance we could run into a bit of… resistance where we’re going. Kris, Liam, Charlie, and I… we’re normally all that’s necessary for a typical security detail, but we’d like to round out the team with a body double. On paper, you’d be listed as a personal assistant. Out in the field, we’d mostly have you play decoy. One of us would always be with you as a precaution.”

Sam listened intently; her vibrant hazel eyes locked onto mine. “A business trip. To where? Somewhere local, or…”

“That’s classified,” Liam muttered stiffly. “Until you agree to the job.”

“Who’s the client?”

“That’s also classified.”

Sam crossed her arms. “Whatcanyou tell me?”

“You’d have to sign an NDA,” I said. “We’ll provide you with training prior to deployment. We’d be away for about a month at most.”

Her brow furrowed slightly. “Oh…”

“Would that be a problem?”
