Page 36 of Decker's Dilemma

My eyes widen. “Nope, that part was conveniently left out.”

Felix laughs and places his hand on my shoulder. “You thought it was going to be a nice, normal, chill night where you and Cara could drink, and flirt, and stare into each other’s eyes? Sorry.”

Not that I’d admit it, but yes, I kind of did think that.

“You don’t think it’s weird that I’m here for this? I’m her PI, and now bam—‘oh by the way, I kind of know all of these people.’”

Felix laughs again and shrugs. “Decker, I don’t know what the fuck is going on tonight, but it’s definitely not going to be boring. I really hope she’s a nice girl, because Clover is extremely protective of Cara. And Clover is...let’s just say even I make sure to not get on her bad side.”

“She’s worse than Cara?” I ask, blinking slowly as I remember her almost pulling out that gun on me like a total badass.

“They are as bad as each other, and when put together, they are double the trouble. They were both raised the same way. They were taught how to fight, how to use weapons...everything. They aren’t MC members, but let’s be real, they might as well be. That was their life.”

“Yeah, but Cara is a teacher, and Clover was a cop turned FBI agent,” I point out. “They are definitely making their own mark in the world.”

Felix nods. “One hundred percent. But you can take the girl out of the club...”

But you can’t take the club out of the girl.

“It’s always going to be a part of them,” I say, understanding what he means.

“Yep.”

Fire comes and sits next to me, and rests her little head on my leg, her long, dark lashes crescents on her cheeks as she apparently starts to take a nap. I don’t know much about toddlers, but she’s pretty damn cute.

“She does that,” Felix whispers, smiling down at his young daughter. “Just falls asleep anywhere. She must really like you, though. She normally only does that with Clover’s family or mine.”

I don’t have much experience with children, so it’s nice that he thinks that.

Cara and Clover come back with cheesecake and brownies, Clover gasping when she sees her daughter resting on me. “Oh my God, that is the cutest thing.”

I look next to her to Cara, who is also smiling at me with gentle eyes. “That’s pretty cute.”

“And he’s good with kids,” Clover mutters, putting the dessert on the dining table and coming over to pick up Fire. “I’ll put her in her bed.”

Cara sits down next to me on the couch. “Hello again.”

“Hi. I’m only just finding out that this isn’t just a casual catch-up dinner,” I say, raising my brows.

She covers her laugh with her palm, trying to contain it. “I’m sorry. Clover insisted we do it here so I’m not alone when I meet her. I don’t know what she thinks could happen, but here we are.”

“How are you feeling about it?” I ask, taking in her face, her glossy lips and kohl-lined brown eyes. She looks beautiful tonight in her tight jeans and white top.

“I’m a little nervous,” she admits, pursing her lips. “I don’t know. She’s my blood, but also a stranger. We might not even like each other. The whole thing is really weird, but I know that I’m doing the right thing by meeting her.”

“I’m here for you,” I tell her quietly.

She nods. “Thank you.”

A knock at the door has all our heads turning. “Do you want me to get it?” I ask, like I live here or something.

“No, it’s okay, I will. It will give me a minute with her before Clover starts in on her,” she grumbles, getting up and heading to the door.

Felix and I watch and wait.

Who knows how this night is going to turn out?
