“We will see you then,” Felix says to me, standing and offering Clover his hand. “We have to pick up Sapphire. We left her with Faye for a few nights. Who knows what the two of them are up to?”

Clover waves goodbye with a big smile and then the two of them leave. I reopen my laptop and get back to work. With Nadia only working part-time now, I’ve taken on a lot of her administration work, but I don’t mind it. It’s kind of peaceful sitting here alone and getting it all done.

Lunchtime comes around quickly and I head out to grab something to eat with my sister. She gives me a hug when she sees me, and we take a seat outside, enjoying the sunshine. I haven’t seen her since I got back into town.

“How was your work trip?” she asks, browsing the menu like she hadn’t already looked at it online. I bet she knows exactly what she wants, because she does this every time.

“It was good,” I say, smiling at the thought. “I actually ended up partying with some friends.”

Confusion flashes in her blue eyes. “I thought it was work. You went there and got drunk? Who are you?”

I laugh. “Well, I did the work, and then I ran into Felix and his wife and we ended up at a family event of theirs. It was crazy, but I had a good time.”

“That doesn’t sound too bad at all. Maybe I’ll tag along on your next one.”

Last thing I’d want is my baby sister coming to an MC clubhouse with me, but I smile and nod anyway. Simone is a beautiful girl and I have no doubt she’d catch the eye of plenty of their men, and yeah, I don’t think I’d like that too much. Nope, I think she should end up with someone safe and boring, like a banker or lawyer. Someone who is into the stock market or something.

“How’s work been?” I ask. I’m so proud of her for owning her own business. She’s always loved animals, and when she told me she was starting a dog-grooming business I’m pretty sure I looked at her like she had grown an extra head. She has a degree in criminology, so it was a little left field. But she made her own path, and I know she’s happy with what she does.

“Yeah, really good. I had to hire another person because we’re getting so busy,” she says with a smile. “Seems I am making quite the name for myself.”

“I’m not surprised,” I comment. “I’m proud of you, you know that? You knew what you wanted, and you went after it.”

“I just wanted to do something a little more fun, and I love being with the animals all day. It’s nice that I can make money off that.”

“You know what they say, do something you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.”

“And how about you?” she asks.

“I love what I’m doing now. It’s so flexible, and I can make it what I want. Nadia and I just agreed to become partners at the firm. So it’s going to be my business now, too.”

“Wow, congratulations,” she replies, smiling at me. “That’s huge.”

I nod. “I know. See, I can commit.”

She laughs.

“Do you know what you’re ordering?”

She nods without looking at the menu. “Yeah, I looked at the menu online before we got here. I’m getting the prawns.”

I shake my head at her predictability.

We order our drinks and meals, and talk shit until all the food is gone. And then we head back to work.

Our work that doesn’t feel like work.

Felix and Clover’s daughter, Sapphire, or Fire as they call her sometimes, is such a cute kid. I saw her a couple of times when she was a newborn, and she’s definitely grown a lot since then. When I arrived for dinner, it was just Felix and Fire here. Clover and Cara had ducked out to pick up some dessert.

“Bet you have a hard time saying no to her.” I smirk as Fire turns to me and smiles.

“You have no idea,” Felix grumbles, laughing when she runs up to him and hugs his leg. “But I love being a dad. Something about creating this little life, one that is half me and half Clover... I mean, it doesn’t get any better than that, does it?”

“Well, when you put it like that,” I mutter, and take a sip of my beer. “Is it just us coming tonight?”

Felix stills. “The girls didn’t tell you? They invited Constance to come tonight, so that we’d all be here to suss her out.”
