Cara

I open the door to a pretty, brunette woman.

I’ve always been told that I’m a spitting image of my mother, but I must look like my biological dad a little too, because Constance has some facial similarities to me. We both have brown eyes and hair, although hers is shorter than mine, and I can see that our face shapes are a bit similar and we have the same full lips. It’s obvious that we are related.

She has a bottle of wine in her hands, and she looks nervous as she shifts on her feet. “Cara?”

I nod and smile. “It’s nice to meet you, Constance.”

“Please, call me Con.” She smiles back and then asks shyly, “Can I hug you?”

“Of course.” I grin and open my arms to her.

She holds me tightly and takes a deep breath. “Thank you for agreeing to meet with me.”

“Thank you for agreeing to do it here at my friend’s house,” I say, stepping away and opening the door. It must be hard for her to walk in and not only meet me, but my friends all in one night. She must be really out of her comfort zone, and I do appreciate the fact that she came anyway. “Come on in.”

“No problem, I actually live not too far from here,” she comments, glancing around Clover and Felix’s big-ass house as she enters. Clover lives on a large property, so large that she has to drive when she goes to visit her neighbor’s house. “Although my house looks nothing like this one.”

I lead her into the living room and introduce her to everyone. “Con, this is Clover, my best friend, and her husband, Felix, and you already know Decker, who ended up being Felix’s friend. Small world, isn’t it?”

Con grins awkwardly. “It definitely is. Nice to see you again, Decker.”

“You too,” he replies with a smile.

She hands Clover the bottle of wine. “I didn’t know what to bring, but I didn’t want to come empty-handed.”

“Thank you, that is very thoughtful of you,” Clover says as she accepts the bottle. The rest of us all sit down. “I’ll go get us something to drink. We have wine, beer, juice, soda. Anything you like,” Clover offers Con, being very sweet. A little too sweet.

“A soda sounds great, thank you.”

“Wonderful.” She disappears into the kitchen and Felix follows her to help.

Decker looks like he doesn’t know if he’s supposed to disappear too, so I decide to break the ice. “So tell me about you, Con? How did you find out about me? Did you know your whole life? Are you close to that side of the family? I want to know everything.” I smile, trying to put her at ease.

Con swallows and looks away. “I only just found out about you a few months ago. Dad passed away—he died of a heart attack. I was cleaning out his office when I found some documents about you, a copy of your birth certificate and some photographs. So that’s how I found out.”

I knew Wade was dead. So it’s not him sending Con here on some mission to get something out of us. She must have really just wanted to meet me.

“I’m sorry,” I say.

She smiles sadly. “He wasn’t the best dad, but after my mom died, he was kind of all I had. And now there’s just me. I’m not too close with the rest of the family. I have a few cousins I keep in touch with, that’s it.”

So she’s all alone. No parents.

Just a half sister she’s only just meeting.

“I’m glad you reached out,” I reply, reaching out and taking her hand. “I’ve never really considered Wade my father, more like just a sperm donor, but it’s nice to see that something good could come out of my connection with him.”

Con beams. “Thank you for saying that. I wasn’t sure if you would want to meet me, because of Wade.”

Clover and Felix come back with drinks and a cheese platter. I have no doubt Clover was listening in from the kitchen. I know my best friend more than I know myself.

“So Con, what do you do for work?” she asks, placing a can of chilled soda in front of her.

“Thank you. Um, I’m a waitress at a bar,” Con says, opening her drink. “I was in college, but when Dad died I dropped out and started to work full time to pay for his house or the bank was going to take it.”

“What were you studying?” I ask.
