I passed her the pen so she could add her own.

And yet, you’ve been wandering around here for a month.

You should know by now I can’t control my feelings for you. I have to stay close.

I hope you’ve managed to control your urges, at least.

I haven’t done anything to you. Nothing more than a kiss that I give you every night. I won’t touch you until you ask me to. And even if you beg for it, I know you can’t do anything physical for quite some time. I’m not careless.

Actually, I figured all your urges would have been acted out with you touching your own body.

Well, I might have done that a few times.

Why am I not surprised?

How about you sleep naked tonight, give me a little excitement boost when I jump into bed.

I only wrote that last message, because, for the first time in months, she was playing with me, riling me up. Taking the pen and sheet from me again, she flipped it over.

What makes you think you’re getting in the bed?

I’ll take the chair. It’s worked for me all month.

And I’ll leave my clothes on. It’s worked for you all month.

A laugh fell out of me. And I said my next message out loud, “I love you, and I’m sorry Cat. I really am sorry for not telling you everything all along.”

She wrote another message.

Let’s keep it light, just for tonight. I’m already exhausted. But I had to wait up for you.

I’m glad you did.

I’m glad I did, too.

Get some rest. Dream of me.

I think I’ve lived through enough nightmares. (winking face)

Goodnight, Remi Darling.

“Goodnight, Dream.”

Chapter 78

Catharina

There was blood.

There was so much blood and a gurgling noise coming from Remi. His golden stare fixed on me, turning glassy. His dripping pupil was directly in line with a tear clinging to dark lashes. Blood leaked from the thick gash opening his throat and chest, his lungs and slowing heart on display as he fell to the floor.

The deep crimson liquid ran into my cage, soiling my knees as I shook the bars to get free.

“Remi!” I shot up in the bed, my hand on my chest, feeling the rapid beat. Air rushed to enter my lungs, and all my muscles tensed. Dizziness took over, and as I looked over at the computer through blurred vision. I saw the chair he’d sat in these last few nights as we talked via a series of notes, but tonight, the chair was empty. The only thing staring back at me was the screensaver, which resembled me.

“I’m right here, Cat.”

Glancing over the bed, I saw Remi propping himself up on his elbow.
