His fingers tightened on my back, pulling me closer as he shifted us into a position that had us lying next to each other.

“I probably shouldn’t have kissed you in the places I did last night, either. I just couldn’t help myself. And I can still fucking taste you.”

“Why did you come here tonight? For round two?”

“Yeah. I wanted to fuck you.”

My head dipped with disappointment.

“But…I guess we’ll sleep together instead.” His arms squeezed around me, and I felt light tremors in his limbs again.

And that, along with him putting my needs first and understanding that my body couldn’t handle anything strenuous, rocked me to sleep.

Maybe he really did feel something for me.

Something that I could use to my advantage.

Chapter 57

Catharina

Abig bird had appeared outside the window, almost falling over on its landing. Its white feathers splayed as it stretched its wings. It didn’t fly away.

“Do you think it’s injured?” I asked.

It was an egret, apparently. Or so Remi had told me before plopping himself down on my bed.

I’d never heard of one of those, and my capacity to genuinely believe anything he said was running low.

Remi had been here a few times this week, doing nothing but drawing pictures with me and teaching me how to perfect features.

Working on a new sketch, he looked up from over the pad. “It doesn’t appear injured.”

“No. It doesn’t.”

The egret stretched again.

“It’s a baby or it’s young, at least. It’s probably still learning.”

"How do you know it’s a baby?”

“They grow much bigger than that.”

“Where do you think its family is?”

“I have no idea, but I’ve seen a few on my drives here.”

“You drive here? You’re usually junked-up.” Usually, but not today.

“I’m used to driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol. I’m good.”

“You could kill someone if you hit another car.”

“I could. But I won’t.”

“Spoken like an idiot.”

His laugh entered my ears. “I haven’t taken as much tonight.”
