“I’m okay.”

“You need to see a doctor.”

“No. Not today. Nothing is ruining today. I’m fine now. I promise.”

“Just a quick visit.”

“No, Remi. Not today. I’m fine.” I wasn’t giving up, raising another sneaker to the door. They looked so bright compared to my dress.

“Are you sure?” He cupped my face.

“I had a twinge, and it wasn’t the first time today, but it’s gone now. I’m okay.”

He didn’t look convinced—he still looked damn terrified. “Will you do one thing for me as a wedding gift?”

I nodded, agreeing before hearing what he’d asked.

“Will you talk to Rodregez about the surgery? Please...?”

“If you do something for me.”

“I’d do anything for you. Name it.”

“Will you help me find my sister?”

Chapter 34

Remi

What a stupid thing to agree to.

I’ll help you find your sister.

Why did I say that? To keep her happy? To prevent more agonizing pains in her heart?

Both?

Definitely both.

But Rhylie wouldn’t go for it. She hadn’t budged on the matter since I’d first brought it up. The third time I asked, the answer was the same as the first day. I couldn’t pester her about it right now. She was still too fragile for my demands, despite her improvement.

She wasn’t like Cat, ready to grab life by the balls and live it to the fullest. Cat, who stood in front of me, surrounded by pink roses in this beautiful garden.

I’d agreed to be her forever. Promised to love, honor, obey, and be loyal until we die. And it was an honest and easy agreement. I’d have licked the dirt from her Converse after seeing her in this dress.

The lace glided across her chest, the right side dipping each time she breathed in, thieving every grain of my attention throughout her declarations. She’d taken my advice, not opting to pad out the bra area because nothing could make her more beautiful. It scared her, but we’d compromised with a pashmina that draped around her shoulders and hid the majority of her insecurities.

Her stuttering words as she promised herself to me forever still danced in my ears.

I can’t top your vows.

But I vow to take care of your soul because you’ve got our bodies covered.

I vow to love you forever. To be loyal and honest, and to forever try to be all you deserve. To stand with you and be brave enough to face our fears—mostly mine—together.

I vow to be your forever. Because these last few weeks have proved you were always mine. All mine.

I love you, Remi.
