“Mr. Cole?” Feebee’s voice came down the line again.

“Yes, Feebee. I’m still here.”

“Mercer feels it could be related to the nerves in her mouth. The procedure may have set something off, and she may not have felt anything at the time, as she would have been numbed from the injection. He suggests an anti-inflammatory mouthwash that should help with the swelling. Would you like us to drop some off on the way home?”

“Yes, please. If you could.”

“We can be there in about twenty minutes.”

“Thank you.”

I stared at Remi for the entire twenty minutes, watching him through blurred vision because of so many tears.

And then the door knocked, and he shot from the room like he was a damn athlete and not a tattooist who never went to work.

A second later, guests arrived at my bedside. And it wasn’t Doctor Mercer Novaletti and his partner. A train of furry friends all jumped up onto the sofa bed, one by one. The last one, a tiny black kitten who screeched as much as I did, struggled with the height, falling backward to the floor, and in non-typical cat behavior, the poor little thing didn’t land on its feet.

I leaned forward to scoop him up and kept him in my arms when I realized I had little room to set him down. Three pairs of green eyes stared at me, all in various shades. The little bald guy’s mint eyes reminded me of the mouthwash I needed now, this very minute.

The kitten in my lap had orange eyes. He was another pedigree.

But all the cats were beautiful, and they all brought me comfort with gentle head bumps and paddy-paws against my leg while Remi was elsewhere.

He returned, fuming with himself that he’d left the door open, and now his silky bedding was covered in cat hair.

“Damn. They are not fucking staying in here.”

“They were giving me cuddles while you were away.”

“That was nice of them.” He bent at my side. “But I’m back now. Fifteen milliliters.” He directed me, opening the lid and telling me how much I needed to fill the little cup above the cap.

I swished it in my mouth, and the pain numbed slightly. The instant relief was bliss.

“Spit?” Remi held up a clean hand towel for me afterward. And then he wiped the drool from my lips to my chin.

“Any better? Or is it too soon? He said it should help quickly.”

“It has helped a little. It’s not as intense now. God, that stuff is like a miracle in a bottle.” I held up the green liquid, examining it in the light.

He laughed.

“What’s funny?” I placed the bottle on his bedside table.

“I’m glad you’re feeling better. Now I don’t feel so bad that my mind went to a dirty place when I told you to spit. I’ve never told a girl that before.”

“I do not need to know what went on with you and other women in the years I wasn’t here.”

“Nothing.” He cupped my chin when I tried to look away from him. “Nothing went on while you were gone. I meant before that.”

“I was gone years, Remi. You don’t need to lie to me.”

“I’m not. I was a bit of a manwhore before you, but nothing has happened with anyone since you. I swear. I made vows to you that I would only ever be yours and honored them.”

I froze, hackles and every other hair on my body rising. “Are we married?”

“There was no priest or officiant. We were young and stupid, and I was off my fucking head, but I still kept my promise.”

“You were romantic, by the sounds of it. And you say we have no good memories.”
