His voice was lower again. Deadly. “She has nightmares about you, Remi. She just doesn’t realize you’re one of the monsters in her story.”

“I did awful things, Ollie. Awful things to my girl, and it’s only okay because she doesn’t remember them. What happens when she’s asleep, it’s just a dream.” I changed my tune instantly, returning to collect my cup from the machine, full with the perfect blend, and took the first sip. “In reality, she’s happy now.”

“It isn’t real! She’s living a lie! You’re like the Mrs. Doubtfire of boyfriends.”

“Ironically,” I took another sip. “I watched that yesterday. Good movie.”

I headed back to my bedroom and stayed there for the week, aside from lunch collections, because Ollie wouldn’t be on board with this unless I fessed up.

And I wasn’t fucking doing that.

Chapter 26

Catharina

Irolled around Remi’s sofa bed with my hand to my face to relieve the pain. It didn’t work. Nothing worked.

“I can’t take it anymore.” My voice was muffled, distorted by my tight fist against my cheek.

Remi clicked the call button on his phone. It was the twenty-third time Rodregez hadn’t answered, and I was losing hope that this pain would ever go away.

The root canal had been painless. My nerves had pinned me to the bed at Rodregez’s home practice and held me down for him to get to work. That was three days ago.

“It shouldn’t hurt this much, right?”

“It’s probably just triggered a response from some nerves, maybe. I don’t know. I’ve never had a root canal.”

“I can’t take it anymore.”

“We’ll get through. I’ll keep trying.”

Another ten calls, and there was still no answer.

There was no one else home. Ollie and Dec had gone to work, wherever work was, and Woodrow and Jolie were at Beyond Heaven. He was teaching the rescue dogs basic stuff, like how to sit and give their paw, before their mission to become therapy animals was set in place. No one was here to hear me wailing in agony as I writhed on the bed.

“Should I reheat that water bottle?” Remi asked. The bottle was resting on the pillow, giving my face a little heat while waiting for another call to be ignored.

I shook my head, igniting more pain. “No. It doesn’t help me.”

“I’ll try Novaletti instead.” Remi was calling instantly.

“Hello,” a woman’s gentle voice echoed through Remi’s phone, answering on the fourth ring.

“Feebee?”

“Yes, hello, Mr. Cole.”

“Good evening. Is Mercer working today?”

“We’re just leaving the office. Was there an emergency?”

“I know he isn’t a dentist, but Catharina had a root canal done on Thursday, which was painless at the time. She’s in extreme pain now, and all her gums have swollen up. She has some issues with her heart, and for that reason, I’d like to keep her stress levels down. But she literally cannot move without screaming in agony.”

“I will pass on the message. One second, Mr. Cole.”

“Thank you.” Remi’s eyes, loaded with sympathy, moved to me and my gritted teeth. “They’ll get something for you, Little Dream, don’t worry. You’ll feel better.”

“It hurts. It hurts a lot.” I pushed the water bottle away, and it fell to the floor with a thump. I forced my head into the pillow, wishing it wasn’t as soft as it was because I needed a little more pressure.
