“And say what, exactly?” he whispered. “That I’m gay? Queer as a seven dollar bill? That I figured you were into guys ever since I found out where you worked?” Preston’s lips snapped shut, cutting off his tumbling words, and he held his breath, his body going tense.

The fuck…

I stared at his red face. He obviously knew about Elite and seemed almost…guilty. “Does what I do bother you?”

He hesitated before shaking his head. “You have to know I would never judge you.”

He shifted on his backside, intensifying my thought he’d done something he considered to be wrong.

I slid my arm from behind his back and pulled one of his tells, wiping my hands down my thighs. We’d stepped over that Sharpie stain, all right. Just not in a way that would preferably end with mutual orgasms.

I inhaled a steadying breath. “Got something you need to confess, stepbrother of mine?”

Chapter 12

Preston

“No?” I squeaked, lying through my teeth.

“Bullshit. You’re twitchy, blushing, and biting your lower lip the same as you were that day your mom—sorry, Jacqueline—caught us sneaking sips of wine from the bottle she’d left out on the kitchen counter.”

I released my teeth’s hold on my lip, lifted my chin, and flitted my gaze toward him for a brief second. He stared me down with an inquisitive stare rather than anger, thank fuck.

And even though I hated revealing private things about myself, I wanted that connection we used to share, the openness between us we’d had as teens when I hadn’t needed to disclose my feelings. He’d always seen.

“F-Fine,” I admitted and blew out a long exhale. “I’m a computer geek. It didn’t take more than one minute for me to track down your social media.”

“I don’t post anything online about my job.” He still didn’t appear upset over what I’d done.

“No, but Sean had pictures of his brother Micah, which led to their family business.” My voice barely escaped, the guilt inside me easily recognizable to anyone with ears.

“You little nerd, you,” Drake said with a surprising chuckle.

My shoulders relaxed the slightest bit, and I braved another glance his way.

Those vibrant blue eyes lit with what looked a lot like pride. My lips twitched in response.

“What else did you learn about me?” he asked, leaning into my personal space with that smirk lingering on his mouth, close enough my heart began to pound.

Where you live—a mere three blocks from me.

What kind of car you splurged on—a Mercedes.

Your favorite bar—O’Malley’s.

The comfort food you go to on dreary days—Stouffer’s frozen lasagna.

“Nothing,” I lied, not about to out myself for being a serious stalker who was obsessed with his stepbrother.

Drake studied me intently but without a hint of judgment in his gaze. I didn’t want to look away, which would only make me appear even guiltier than I already felt.

“What?” I finally asked, too antsy to sit still and be patient for one more second.

I could see Drake’s mind working, but he didn’t share with me what he thought about.

“What?” I pressed, my voice a little louder, annoyed that I had opened up, and he hesitated.

“Did you ever…” He shook his head and looked away first, rubbing a weary hand over his trimmed beard.
