It wasn’t even that Thomas kept him there Wednesday but more Laken calling him because there were problems at one of the new acquisitions that she was working with.

He’d had to pull all sorts of contracts and look them over before West made a decision to continue on or stop negotiations.

Yesterday, that had been Thomas. Not that he couldn’t have gone home and done the work from there, but Thomas felt it’d be better if they got to the bottom of things in the office and held everyone there until eight.

He could have said no way and left to work from home, but if he did that, he didn’t want the other attorneys and clerks working in the department thinking that he wasn’t a team player.

One of these days it would be his team and he had to set a good example now, he knew that.

“Don’t worry about it,” she said. “It’s the weekend now. Do you have to do a lot of work?”

“No,” he said. “At least I don’t think so. West went to see Abby this weekend, so he’ll be working less than normal. When he’s in the Hamptons he gets more done, but Abby’s apartment is pretty small so it’s not like they sit around there. They go out and do things.”

“It’s nice he goes to her place and spends time with her. I’m sure they visit with her family, right?”

“They do,” he said.

He’d been waiting to see what was going on with her for Thanksgiving. He wanted to go with her but didn’t want to invite himself. It’s not like he would ask her to go to North Carolina since he knew she bought her plane ticket and wanted to see her sister and her sister’s family.

The two of them walked down to the lobby and West hailed a taxi.

“Do you want to see my place?” she asked.

“I’d like to, but you never invite me up.”

She slid into the taxi next to him. “Not much to see. It’s smaller than your bedroom.”

“I doubt that,” he said.

“No, it is. It’s one big room. I have a wardrobe dividing my bed from the living room.” She held her finger up in a quotes sign.

“Oh,” he said. “Hey, I know cramped quarters. Remember eight kids in three bedrooms growing up.”

“You make a good point. But if you want to come up while I grab clothes for the weekend you can.”

He tapped on the glass of the taxi driver. “Can you wait while we run up to get a few things?”

“Sure can,” the driver said.

“We’ll be fast,” she said. “I promise.”

The driver nodded. “If I have to move, I’ll drive around the block and be back. Don’t worry.”

Braylon wasn’t too worried. He’d tip well like he always did.

They pulled in front of Lilian’s apartment building, the two of them getting out and climbing the two flights of stairs.

She unlocked her door and she was right. It was small and tight but not cluttered.

“You have it decorated nicely,” he said.

“I try to make it comfortable, but it’s not easy.”

He followed her to the other side where her bed was. She was opening drawers and getting clothes out for the weekend. He was thrilled they were going to spend it together.

“You did a good job with it,” he said, moving around. He saw some pictures on a shelf. “Is this your family?”

“That’s Quinn and me. And then me and her four kids.”
