His eyes gleam with something dark and wild, and I suddenly realize heisthat much of an asshole. That and more. This is the real Jason, not the cookie-cutter version he presents to the world to become a senator like his father. A selfish, cruel, sadistic dick who loves seeing other suffer.

“Jason…”

“Yes, Nadia?”

I don’t know what to say, what to do to get out of this mess. “I’m sorry I got involved that first day. More than you know. I had no idea what was going on; all I saw was a girl in trouble. You understand that, don’t you?”

“Perfectly. Lie back.”

I bite my lower lip. “Please. We don’t have to be enemies. Before this year, you didn’t even know I existed. We can go back to that. I’ll fade into the background and leave you alone. I promise I won’t cause any trouble.” I’m bargaining because I know where threats are likely to get me. But every word feels more desperate and hopeless. They’re received with cool indifference.

“I know you won’t. Lie back.”

“No.”

Silence meets the word at first. Then Jason pushes up from the desk and laughs. “I knew you’d make this entertaining.” Shaking his head, he pulls out his phone. “Here’s the difference between you and I, cupcake. You make threats. I give warnings. Now, let’s get this appealing picture posted…”

I feel sick to my stomach.

The picture isn’t of me, but it won’t matter. From that angle, it could be any white girl on there, and if I appear to be the one posting it…

“Wait.”

I can’t let him ruin my future on a whim. I can’t let him make me that girl. The one everyone hears about in any town: she wassopromising, until compromising videos or pictures came up. Fast forward ten years and she’s doing porn because no one else would hire her.

She’s not me. She won’t be. I’ll do just about anything to avoid that fate.

And the monster across the room knows it.

He’s sick—there’s no other explanation. He can have any girl in the school. He could have had me if he’d asked me out instead of what he’s been doing since the start of the year. He’s blackmailing me because helikesit.

“I’m waiting, cupcake.”

But I don’t move. I don’t think I can. I wet my lips, my mind racing as I desperately try to think of a way to escape this.

Finally, I sit on my bed, each beat of my heart resounding in my ears, almost deafening. My legs remain closed.

He wants to make me spread them for him to show just how powerless I truly am. Ripping my thighs apart himself wouldn’t send the same message. Jason isn’t brutal. He’s vicious.

“Why?” I ask.

He tilts his head.

“Why are you making me do this?” I try to understand. Understanding might make this less terrifying and daunting. I’m also playing for time. I don’t know what he has planned for me once I comply, but it can’t be good for me. “Is that what gets you off? Blackmail?”

He shrugs, unaffected by what I intended as an insult. “Not typically, but right now? Certainly.”

I feel a little sick. He finds this arousing.

“Is it about taking control?" I push.

Jason moves. I flinch as he approaches. Him getting closer to me wasn’t my intent.

I climb onto my bed, drawing my knees to my chest and move away until my back hits the wall.

“I’m not taking control of you, Nadia. You can make your own choices. Each has its consequences.” He grins, delighted to throw my words back at me. “So what will it be?”

His hands brace on either side of my feet and he bends forward, his face almost reaching mine. “Time’s up.”
