Chapter Thirty-Two

AQUARIANS ARE FORWARD THINKERS

Kasper

We barely make it to the airport without the police catching us, and now the security is making me paranoid. Hopefully, it will be too late before they realise we’ve left Haiti. The love I have for the country will soon be a distant memory. We won’t be welcome back here, that much I’m sure of.

“Do you think Maris is okay?” Owen asks.

“I really hope so. I regret leaving her behind.” She’s a really special girl, and I’ve never met anyone like her before. Maybe I never will again. I meant it when I said I loved her, even if I didn’t explain myself well.

“We should have stayed until the end.”

“Her father wouldn’t accept us, and he’s the king of the sea. We can’t exactly argue with that.”

“When the doctors told you I was ill, you didn’t just roll over and accept it.”

“This is different.”

“How so?”

“Maris and I don’t have a future. I have to leave her to follow her own path, and we need to get our lives back.”

“What’s waiting in England for us? We gave everything up to come here.”

“We’ll start from scratch. You still have your computer skills, and we’re going to earn an honest living.”

“Do you love her?”

“Yes.” I don’t hesitate this time.

“Then you should fight for her.”

“What about you?”

“Does she have any sisters?”

I laugh and punch him in the arm. It’s been so long since I’ve been able to joke around with him like this. “Maris made it so I can swim underwater without needing to come up for air,” I say.

“I guess we only need to steal one scuba diving kit, then.” He laughs, but I don’t think he’s joking.

“What if we get caught? There might be no going back if we don’t leave Haiti now.”

“I heard you caught some waves with some dolphins. There’s always another way if we need one.”

“Are you serious? Should we go back?”

“What’s your heart telling you?”

“We should’ve decided this before we left for the airport.”

“Be serious with me.” He touches my arm. Now’s no time to hide my feelings or what I want. I’ve been real since I met Maris, and that’s not going to change.

“I love Maris, and I’m ready to fight for her and her city.”

“Over there,” someone shouts, and when I turn, it’s obvious our time is up. We were never getting out of Haiti, and deep down, I never wanted to.

“Quick. We need to leave,” I say to Owen.
