“That’s where you’re wrong. I’ve seen the effect you’ve had on Maris, and I don’t like it. Both of those girls deserve someone who can give them everything.”

“So, the human’s really a saint,” I mutter, holding out my hand for him to take.

“I’ve made asshole decisions, and I’m not proud of some of the things I’ve done, but I love Maris and want what’s best for her.”

He grabs hold of me and pulls himself close. We’re chest to chest. “Chill out, Romeo. The person who’s going to stand in your way isn’t me. The guy you need to worry about is the king.”

“I know we don’t have a future, but I’d like to think she’ll find someone worthy.”

“Excellent, but right now we have a city to save, so let’s go.”

I help him secure a good hiding spot for his piece of the broken jug before we swim to Pasha’s house. I squeeze his hand harder than necessary, but it makes me feel better about him judging me. I’m used to people either looking up to me or being envious. Kasper doesn’t do either of these things, which shouldn’t bother me, but it does.

When Pasha’s mum catches sight of us, she ushers us inside. “Why have you brought a human to my dwelling?” she scolds.

“That’s the least of our worries,” I say.

“Then what are you doing here?”

“Neptune’s captured Princess Maris and is going to use her as leverage.”

“My ex-husband?” She rubs her hands over her face in disbelief.

“Yes.”

“Where is he, and where is my daughter?”

“They’re probably heading to the prison, then the throne room. Or maybe just the throne room.”

“Pasha’s with her father?”

“I’m afraid so, although I have no idea whose side she’s on.”

“How could you let this happen and what does it have to do with this human?”

“The human belongs to Maris.”

“I have a name,” Kasper says, holding out his hand. Pasha’s mum looks at it but doesn’t accept it straight away. “I’m Kasper. I don’t mean anyone any harm, but I’d like to get on with rescuing Atlantis so I can finish my mission.”

“The last time I met a human was the day my Neptune let out his wrath on the city. You can call me Angel.”

“I never said I was a good luck charm, but I’m here to help,” Kasper says.

“I’m Ryn,” I say, because I’ve never formally been introduced to Pasha’s mum.

“I know who you are,” Angel says, not looking too happy about it.

“Okay, now that’s all sorted, shall we go?” Kasper says, making my lips crack into a smile. He’s so matter-of-fact and nothing like me.

We all agree it’s time to head to the castle, and once I have a hold of Kasper’s hand, I lead the way. We don’t look like the perfect team of heroes, but we’ll have to do.
