Chapter Twenty-Five

AQUARIANS LIKE TO STAND OUT FROM THE CROWD AS INDIVIDUALS

Ryn

When we started to follow Neptune, I never thought I’d be seeing Maris naked for the first time with a human pawing all over her. I’ve always taken the future we had planned out for granted. Now it’s slipping away, I kind of feel sad. Not because I have feelings for Maris. I don’t. It’s selfish, but being king meant my life was set. What am I going to do without that? The king would never let Maris marry a human, but this changes things. She’d never let me touch her like that because she said she was waiting for her husband.

Maris’s tail shimmers back into place as Pasha gasps.

“What are you doing here?” Maris asks. Her face is crimson as she swims in front of Kasper to cover his erection.

“We’re here to find you, but Pasha’s dad might have his own motive,” I say.

“Princess, you’re going to help me get my mermen back and get an audience with the king,” Neptune says, and my already queasy stomach takes a bigger dive. I feel trouble is brewing, and I’m going to be dragged into it.

Maris is looking at me, and she must see something in my frown that makes her cautious. “Your men were chasing me when I was on land. What if I refuse to help you free them?” Maris asks.

“You have no choice. You’re outnumbered,” Neptune says, and I’m pretty sure he’s including me and Pasha in his headcount of allies. I have to wait for the right time to reveal whose side I’m on.

“You’ll let my friend go. He’s of no concern to you,” Maris says, gesturing to Kasper.

“You’re in no place to make demands, but I’ll allow it.” Neptune gestures for Maris to lead the way out of the cave.

I grab hold of Pasha’s hand so she’s forced to look at me.

“The oracle said my decision today would be significant,” she says, following them out into the open sea.

“What does that mean?” I ask, but she doesn’t get a chance to respond.

“Pasha, I want you up here with me,” Neptune says.

Her hand untangles from mine and she gives me a look I can’t decipher. My heart pounds in my chest. Would she betray her fellow mermaids for her father?

I slip to the back of the group, and when I think I’m forgotten about, I go back to get Kasper. Never in my life did I think I’d need the help of a human. Once back in the cave, I find him holding a piece of what I think is the Aquarius jug. “Have you only found one piece so far?”

“No. The rest is in a safe location. This is the latest one. Do you think they’ll harm Maris?”

“I don’t really know the man that’s taken her, but I think he intends to hurt the king.”

“And what are we going to do about it?”

“The only upper hand we have is that we already know what they want. It’ll no longer be a surprise to us when they enter Atlantis. You’re the one who’s good at following clues. What do you suggest?”

“What will Pasha’s other family think of this?”

“I doubt her mum will be on board. The woman seems like a hard-ass from the times I’ve met her, and she obviously isn’t with her dad. I know where she lives, so going there is probably the best idea we’ve got. Let’s go.” I turn to leave.

“Wait.”

“What?”

“I’m human and not a fast swimmer. I’m going to need some help getting there.”

“You were getting frisky with my fiancée, and now you want to hold my hand? Anyone would think you had a thing for merfolk,” I tease.

“She’s too good for someone like you.”

I grit my teeth, but I can’t disagree. “You don’t know anything about me.”
