I blink a few times, trying to clear my head. “My name isn’t important.” If it gets back to my father that some mad man is talking about a mermaid he met called Maris, I’m not sure he’d believe it wasn’t my fault.

“Your tail is beautiful, and your eyes are as blue as the ocean.” He softly strokes my hair. I watch his movement, confused by what’s going on.

“What are you doing?” I ask, narrowing my eyes.

“You kissed me. A little flirting is harmless.” He smiles so brightly I have to fight the urge to kiss his soft lips again.

I frown, shutting out my inappropriate thoughts. I’m a mermaid and he’s a human. That’s not a compatible match. “The kiss was to help you. I gave you help from the sea.”

He studies me for a few seconds while leaning back on his hands. “Thank you. Okay, I can tell you’re not like the girls from the hotels, so I’m going to cut the bullshit. I need to find the jug of Aquarius.” He switches off the charm and turns deadly serious.

What girls from a hotel? Why am I being compared to humans? “And why would you think I could help with that? Everyone knows the zodiac sign is an air symbol.” His over-friendly exterior is gone, and I guess mine is too. Where has being nice gotten me so far? My best friend betrayed me and my father doesn’t trust my judgement.

“The lost city of Atlantis is underwater, and I think that’s where the jug is hiding.”

“You have a vivid imagination.”

Kasper must fancy himself a treasure hunter, but nobody has discovered the city in five hundred years. I’ve heard about the legend of Aquarius. The water bearer’s jug is said to heal life. In the wrong hands, the god’s power could be used for evil. I don’t know where the item is, and even if I did, I wouldn’t show a human.

“Until this evening, I wasn’t sure mermaids exist, but here you are. I have to believe the city is real and there is such magic.”

“Why?”

He runs his palm over his hair, pulling the wet strands off his forehead. “Because I need to save him. I need to save my brother.”

The desperation in his eyes is enough to make me consider helping him, but Daddy raised me better than to fall for that. It’s one thing to save his life but another to heal a sick human. I move back towards the water. “I can’t help you.”

“Please. I’m begging you.” He grabs my arm.

I shake him off. “I’m sorry. I can’t.”

Resurfacing was a mistake. Maybe saving him was a bad idea also. I plunge back into the depth of the sea and get far away from the human that’s messing with my mind. They say mermaids can steer people towards their death, but that human may just be the death of me.
