“I was unconscious, but I guess you could call it that.”

“And Maris, were you happy to save him?”

“Of course. I wouldn’t want anyone to die when I could’ve been there to rescue them.”

“It’s more than that, though. You two are soul mates. The stars have aligned to join you together.”

“If you think we’ve already fulfilled the latest clue, where is the piece of the jug?” I ask.

“I cannot be sure, but the signs are showing you need to go back to the location you first met.”

“Does the pearl tell you anything else?” Maris asks.

“Only that the waters are looking murky. I want you both to be careful.”

“We’ll be cautious. Thank you, Oracle,” Maris says.

“Yes, thanks,” I add.

We did get what we came for. We know where to go. After saying our goodbyes, we head outside. Maris bites her nails.

“What’s wrong?” I ask.

“My dad forbids me from leaving the city, and I’ve already put him through hell.” She stops swimming and covers her eyes. “He’s going to be so mad.”

“This is bigger than you or me. This is about my brother’s life. You can’t let him down,” I say, hoping to talk her around.

“You’re right. We’ll go back to the place near the treasure box, and I’ll come right back. He won’t even notice I’m gone.”

“I’ll look after you, Maris. Everything will be okay.”

“We’re doing this for Owen. My dad will understand.” She nods like she’s trying to convince herself. The king seems stubborn, and it’s better to ask for forgiveness than waste any more time.

I need her, even if the king will be mad. We can deal with his wrath later. For now, I’m going to put my own wishes first and take the next step to saving my brother.
