Chapter Twenty-Four

CALMING BLUE IS AQUARIUS’S SPIRIT COLOUR

Pasha

We’re always one step behind Maris, which is the story of my life. The oracle is alone when we arrive, and I don’t have to ask her to know we’ve missed them. Ryn takes one glance at the almost empty room and turns around.

“Come in,” the oracle says.

“No. It looks like we’ve missed the person we came to see,” I say, hovering for a few seconds. I’m about to leave when she speaks again.

“Maris and her human have left, but I can offer you a reading,” she says.

“I already know how my story turns out. I’ll work at the factory until I’m old and grey. No loving husband. No children eating my money away. My cave will be modest but homely. See? There’s no need to tell me anything.”

“If that’s what you want, then you’ll make it happen.”

I hesitate for a moment, wondering what that means. “Do you see something different?”

“Come sit down.”

“I need to find Maris.” I point to the door.

“This won’t take long, and I may be able to help you find her.”

“Okay. I can spare a few minutes.” I move to the table, and the oracle casts her hands over her mystical pearl.

“You’re at a crossroads. The choices you make in the next few days will affect everything that comes after.”

“What should I do?” I don’t like that kind of weight on my shoulders. It would be easier if I knew the right answers.

“Only you can decide. Go now or you’ll be late.”

“Where do I need to be?” My stomach ties up in knots.

“The hidden treasure would be a good starting point.” Her eyes glaze over like she’s no longer with me. I wait a few seconds, and when she doesn’t move, I presume she’s done.

“Okay. Thank you.”

Ryn’s waiting outside when I leave the cave. “What did she say?” he asks.

“We need to go to the shipwreck and locate the treasure box.”

“Okay. Let’s go.” He seems so composed, whereas I’m freaking out inside. I want to be a good person and do the right thing for everyone. I’d rather not be at a crossroads. I’d rather have a straight path to the correct answer.

“I have a bad feeling about this.” I bite my lip.

“Did the oracle tell you not to go?”

“No, but she said my decisions will affect my future.”

“Do you want to do nothing to influence it?”

He already knows I’ve been trying to change my job prospects, so his question is a taunt. “I can’t do nothing.”

“Then what are we waiting for?” He holds out his hand, and I take it.
