“If you’d admitted Maris had run off with a human, we wouldn’t be in this mess.”

“Me?” I look at him, balling my hand into a fist. “Why didn’t you tell him the truth?”

“Because I want to be his son-in-law.”

“Well, I respect my life enough to keep my mouth shut too.”

And I want my friend back.

“So, what are we going to do?”

“The only thing we can.” He shrugs like he doesn’t know what I mean. “We have to go find Maris.”

“We don’t know whether she even made it out of the cave.”

“I do. I didn’t leave her there.” I wave my arms in frustration.

“Then where is she?” he growls.

“She’s gone in search of the jug.” He would’ve known that if he hadn’t returned home.

I don’t tell him she’s already found part of it. The interest he’s taken in it tells me he wouldn’t use it for the greater good.

“Do you know where she’s looking?” He glares at me.

“No, but I’m pretty certain she’s left the sea.”

He grabs hold of my arm.

“Ouch! Get your hands off me.” I pull away.

“Stop playing games and tell me how we’re going to bring Maris home.”

“She went with Kasper onto the island.”

“What?” He goes to grab me again, but I swim back. “Why did you let her do that?”

“She’s a grown woman. She can do what she likes.” I fold my arms.

“That’s my future wife. You should’ve stopped her.”

My mind fills with negative emotions. It hurts that he still sees her as his future wife. I’m angry it takes something like this for him to acknowledge her as his betrothed and the way he’s throwing it in my face because she’s done something he doesn’t like. It’s like he forgets I have feelings, even if we weren’t an official couple. I’m also annoyed he thinks anyone can stop Maris doing what she wants. She deserves a life partner who will respect her mind, and I deserve someone who puts me first. “She deserves better than you, and if she wants to explore the land with Kasper, who am I to say she can’t go?”

“Come on, then.” Ryn starts to swim away.

“You can’t be serious. I’m not leaving the water.” I follow him, despite my protest.

“Yes, you are. You heard what the king said.”

I curse. “I’ve never been farther than the shipwreck.”

“Today’s your lucky day because you’re going to go all the way.” His tone oozes annoyance. He probably doesn’t want to do this either.

“The last time I let you go all the way is how we ended up in this mess,” I bite out.

He doesn’t slow for me. It’s like his mind is made up and he’s ready for the mission.

We make our way to the harbour and Ryn helps himself to a few things from a docked boat. “Dry yourself off and put some clothes on from the lower deck.”
