“Have you done this before?” I look around, hoping we’re not seen. I’ve never walked on my legs before, but he makes it look easy. He climbs on the boat, baring his ass. He uses a towel to cover up and offers me a hand.

“Not everything is black and white.” I can’t read his expression.

I have no idea what he means by that, but I doubt he’s going to give me a better answer. I bite my lip before closing my eyes to concentrate on my legs. I wiggle my fin from side to side until each side feels like it’s moving freely, and when I look down, my scales are gone.

My hand grips the side of the boat to steady myself, and I hoist myself up. Water flows over the deck while I fall to the floor. Once I’ve relaxed, I crawl towards the inner cabin. I hold the rail as I make my way down to the cabin. It feels strange to dry my skin. The long t-shirt I borrow from the boat looks like a dress I’ve seen in books. It wraps around my legs and feels restrictive. I don’t know how anyone wears trousers, although Ryn slips them on with ease.

“Are you sure about this?” I ask.

“The shirt looks good, but are you wearing underwear?”

I pick up a tiny piece of material. “This?”

He nods and helps me into them, then he goes to exit the boat onto the land. I hesitate for a few seconds, but soon I’m standing on solid ground.
