Chapter Eight

AQUARIANS WANT TO MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE

Kasper

Unwrapping the seaweed from around my legs, I place it around Maris. Her legs are the most beautiful I’ve ever seen. My attraction to her is like nothing I’ve felt before. Her flawless body is pretty from head to toe, and her heart seems pure, unlike the women I’ve been hanging out with lately. Trusting her came easily, which is unlike me.

Once she’s dressed in her seaweed skirt, I lead her through the streets of Haiti. Her outfit doesn’t raise any eyebrows because she looks like she’s going to a party. I pick a flower from a flowerbed and tuck it into her hair. “Perfect,” I say, and she smiles.

The hotels and houses closest to the beach belong to the rich. Maris is mesmerised by the buildings, and I hold her hand as we walk through the streets. I love watching her curiosity, and it doesn’t fade as we move away from the prettier side of the island.

I hold her closer as the paths become narrow. “Watch your step.”

“Where are we going?”

“To my home.” It’s too late to start searching the volcanoes. Besides, I’d like to study Lara’s island guide before we set off.

She nods. “Will your brother be there?”

“Yes.”

“It will be nice to meet him.” She seems genuinely happy, and I can’t control the feeling it gives me.

“Owen’s going to love you.”

“Will you tell him I’m from the sea?” A worry line wrinkles her forehead.

“Only if you want me to.” I reassure her by caressing the back of her hand.

“Let me be the one to decide.”

“Sure. We’re almost here.” I guide her over the uneven wood outside our house and open the door. My brother is on the floor when we get inside, and I rush over to him. With Maris’s help, I get him back into his chair.

“What happened?” Owen asks.

“I’m sorry for leaving you. You must’ve fallen.” Pain laces my words. He’s getting worse, and I’m so close to achieving my goal.

“You’ve never brought a girl home. Who’s this?” he asks, looking behind him.

“This is Maris. She’s helping me. Are you okay?”

“Yes, I’m fine. What were you thinking? She knows where we live now.” Usually, I wouldn’t bring anyone here, but Maris isn’t just ‘anyone’, and she isn’t going to tell anyone where we live. He seems to have jumped to the wrong conclusion, and he probably thinks she’s someone I’m dating that might eventually go to the police because I’ve stolen something. I can’t blame him, really. That is usually why I’d be with a pretty lady.

“Maris isn’t like the girls from the hotel. She’s a treasure hunter like me.”

“What if she’s only after the prize?”

“Chill, brother. She’s only here to help.”

“From what we’ve discovered in Haiti, it’s hard to believe someone would help without wanting something in return.”

“Isn’t my word enough?”

“Do you know what they’d do to you in jail?”

“You don’t have to worry about me,” Maris says.

“And why’s that?” Owen asks in an almost hostile way.
