“Why not?”

If I admit it’s because I don’t leave the sea because it's forbidden, he’ll know my disobedience is mild.

“This is my home. I’ve never wanted to leave.”

“What about now? Will you come with me, Maris?”

Butterflies flutter in my stomach. I should want the things Kasper is offering me. This might be my only chance to do something so crazy, and I don’t want to live with regret. If I go with him, I’ll know I’ve lived my life to the fullest.

“Yes. I’ll go with you. I’m trusting you to keep me safe.”

“Always.” We look into each other’s eyes, but it feels deeper than that.

The way out of the cave opens up on its own, and Pasha is waiting outside for us. “Where’s Ryn?” I ask.

“Thank the gods you’re okay,” Pasha says, hugging me. “The kingdom is looking for you. Ryn went back to try and take off some of the heat. We need to go home.”

“Actually, I’m going with Kasper.” He’s standing behind me, but I don’t look at his reaction.

We break apart. “You can’t be serious.”

“Cover for me?” I plead.

She rubs her head. “I wouldn’t even know how.”

“You owe me, so I know you’ll come up with something.”

She hesitantly nods. “Okay.” She points to the books she’s found. “Take these with you.” Then she points at Kasper. “You’d better look after my girl.”

“Yes, ma’am,” he replies, and just like that, I’m heading for the surface with a complete stranger, in search of adventure. I shouldn’t have trusted Ryn, but now all my faith is in another man. I hope I’ve made the right choice.
