Where is she?

“Aragon! There you are!” Kairo jests from the door. “I couldn’t find you in your room.”

“Is something wrong, Kai?” I quiz with a frown as I head toward her.

“No…” she pauses as she steps inside. “Why would anything be wrong?”

“Where’s Yazmine?”

Kairo peers past my shoulder with a frown. “Isn’t she in here?”

“No. She’s not,” I gulp as the panic really starts to set in. “When was the last time you saw her?”

“This morning. Then she left the hospital to come see you.”

“The hospital?”

Kairo nods. “Yeah. That’s how she found out she was pregnant. Doctor—”

My jaw drops, blood rushing to my ears as I fixate on what I’ve just learned. Staring dumbfoundedly at my sister, I don’t process any of what she says next. “Sh-she’s pregnant…?”

“Y-you didn’t know?” Her eyes widen with horror. “Have you seen her today?”

“No…” I shake my head, dread settling in the pit of my belly. I don’t have time to process the fact that she’s carrying my child.

I need to find her first.

Sending a mind link to my family members, my suspicions are validated when they return with responses.

None of them have seen Yazmine today.

I push past Kairo on my way out, the full efficacy of the panic setting in when I realize that she’s missing.

“Inform the others!” I instruct her as I rush toward the stairs. “I’m gonna check surveillance.”

I take the steps two at a time, racing toward the surveillance room and bursting in. Aidan is alarmed when I enter but remains silent as I hurriedly explain the situation. He immediately gets to work, pulling up surveillance records of the entire island for the day.

He traces her this morning, leaving from the hospital and entering the castle. Then, she stopped outside the study area where Felix and I were having coffee that morning. She presses a cheek to the door, then pulls away and abruptly runs back down the hallway.

She doesn’t stop running through all the camera footage we find of her.

That’s when realization sets in—she overheard a part of my conversation with Felix that spurred her into running away.

Yazmine was running away. Running from me—at least, a particular part of what she overheard. All she was doing was coming to tell me that she was pregnant.

Then she ran. Ran as far as she could get, ending up on the rugby field in the east of the island near the training arena. Until she was cornered by a group of female dragons during my training rounds.

Anger has me curling my fists as I watch Belinda and her group shift and snatch Yazmine from the group, dragging her out of the island.

Fuming, I order Aidan, “Find out where they’ve taken her.”

“Already on it,” he informs me. “It’s a mountain just outside the island. It’s not very far.”

I’m about to leave the room when I stop and turn to Aidan, nostrils flaring. “Gather the soldiers. Don’t let them back in.”

“What if they do come back?” he asks.

“Then consider it war.”
