He finished his stack of pancakes and eyed my plate.

“I’m not a mess. But if you touch my food, I’ll bite you.”

“Noted.” He threw his hands up and chuckled. “And that’s exactly what a twenty-six-year-old who has his own place says after he calls his friend desperately on a Friday night asking if he can come over for a sleepover.”

“That’s not exactly how it happened,” I ground out.

He slid his plate into the sink, rinsing it off, to my utter amazement. “Yes, yes, it is.”

I started to argue, but he was right. I had planned on staying up until Em got home. Just to make sure she was home safe, of course.

But after the first few hours passed, I couldn’t take it anymore.

And I wasn’t sure if she was going to bring him home. If I heard them doing anything through our shared bedroom wall—I shuddered.

“Spill, Bash.”

I glanced up and almost choked. Gulping my orange juice, I acted like I actually had choked and urgently needed to drink in order to survive.

Evan folded his arms and stared me down. “You’re fine. Now talk.”

“It’s Em.”

His eyes widened. “Is she okay?” He smacked his forehead and groaned. “Rob’s anniversary—” He smiled sheepishly, but I shook my head.

“Don’t even apologize. We get that the rest of the world moved on. It’s what Rob would’ve wanted.”

“Still—is she torn up about that?”

“That’s part of it. Her boyfriend’s a fuckface who was cheating on her.” I gripped my fork so hard the metal left a red mark when I let go. “She caught him in the act. Plus, she got fired from her job. And it all happened in the span of like an hour on Rob’s anniversary.”

Evan dropped his arms to his side, his mouth falling open. “No kidding?”

“No kidding.”

“So what happened?”

My eyes widened. “Is that not enough for you?”

“It’s not enough for you to show up on my doorstep.”

“I got her a job with the Evergreens.”

“Hey!” His face lit up prematurely. “That’s great. The two of you working together?”

“She went on a date with one of the players last night.”

Evan’s eyes bulged. “No kidding?”

“That’s not even the worst part.”

He strolled back over to the barstools and sidled up next to me. “Carry on…”

“He showed up to get her, and I turned into this animal. It was awful. I’m shocked I didn’t jump the guy.”

The guy. As if it wasn’t Mac Savage himself. But Evan didn’t need extra details. I had to focus on one problem at a time.

“So you’re finally admitting you have feelings for Emily?”
