Bash.

Sebastian.

The guy I lived with and acted like everything was normal.

The guy that I watched date women and men over the years and never told him how I felt.

But in this office, after seeing the way Julie looked at him, I was ready to yank him out of there, profess everything, and put it all on the line.

“My husband adored that recipe you sent me.” She beamed, casting her eyes on me to draw me into the conversation. “He said it was as good as his mama’s meatloaf. Maybe even better.”

I breathed out a laugh and glanced between Julie and Bash again.

She was married. And Bash was an excellent chef. Of course, everyone would look at him with adoration. He was easy to love, and I was being ridiculous.

“Good! I have a potato salad that pairs so well with it. I’ll take a picture of the recipe and send it over to you.”

“Thanks darling. You single-handedly saved my marriage with that meatloaf. I can’t wait.”

He ducked his head and turned to me. “Julie, this is Emily. Emily, this is Julie. I’ll leave so you two can get to business, but Em?”

“Yes?” I bit the corner of my mouth to steady my nerves.

“I’ll either be outside the office or in the kitchen. Come find me when you’re done and we’ll head home.”

“Okay, thanks,” I breathed.

He stepped closer, enveloping me in the comfort of his scent, and lowered his voice. “You’ve got this, okay?”

I nodded, and he kissed the top of my head before disappearing.

“So, how long have the two of you been together?”

“What? Us? We’re not together.”

Julie’s smile fell, and she scoffed. “Could have fooled me. The way he talks about you.” She shook her head. “I really thought—oh well. We’re not here to discuss that, are we?”

My stomach twisted, and I took a seat across from her as she motioned for me to sit down.

“Is that even something that’s legal?”

“What?”

“Can employees date?”

“Oh heavens, yes. My husband’s the head coach. The only issue is between players and medical personnel.”

“You know Sebastian pretty well?”

“Of course. Well, as much as he’ll let me. He’s pretty private. That’s why I thought the two of you were an item. The way he lit up when he was showing me your social media stuff.”

He lit up?

About me?

“He’s like a proud big brother. That’s all.”

Julie smirked and shuffled through a pile of papers on her desk. “I have three brothers and I’ve never seen them light up like that about me. But if you need to tell yourself that, go ahead.”
