“They sniff out fresh meat faster than a bloodhound.” He glanced around. “They’re predators.”

The thought of a hockey player preying on me was more exciting than it should have been. I pressed my cold hands to my reddening cheeks and glanced at Bash.

“If they’re so bad, why’d you get me an interview here?”

He stopped and turned to me, his face twisted. “Because you needed help, and I didn’t think it through.”

I smacked his arm and laced my fingers through his. “Bash! It’s not that serious.”

He smirked and squeezed my hand. “I’ll introduce you to Julie. She’s head of public relations and will be your direct supervisor.”

“If I get the job.”

“You’ll get the job.”

“I wish everyone believed in me like you do.” I sighed and let him lead us down a wide hallway lined with forest green carpet. Everything in this place was over the top and bigger than it needed to be, including a group of hockey players around the next corner.

“Hey Spinach,” one called out and Bash sighed.

“Hi Lightning.”

“Lightning?” I whispered.

“Yeah, that’s Jerrod.”

“Oh, is he fast?”

“No. He’s the goalie.” Bash snorted and pressed his hand to my lower back, guiding me past the group of men who watched our every movement.

As intrigued as I was by Jerrod’s nickname, my attention was seized by a tall man with intense eyes locked on mine. He had a tumble of blonde curls and the scruff of a light beard framing his face. His penetrating eyes were a bright grayish green and I couldn’t look away.

Bash followed my gaze and groaned. “They’re all trouble, Em. Do your job and don’t get attached.”

“Mhm.” I nodded absentmindedly and followed him.

All the hockey players we walked past were larger than life, beaming like they were living their dream lives, and absolutely gorgeous.

But I couldn’t get the guy with the gray-green eyes out of my mind.

There were literal walls between us, but it was as if I could still feel his eyes on me. The way he checked me out and the way he shamelessly smiled when I caught him.

My body flushed just thinking about it.

“Here’s Julie’s office,” Bash said, leading me to a door with a plaque that confirmed our location.

“Bash—”

He let go of my hand and cupped my face in his hands. “Em. Don’t even start. You’re going to be incredible. Okay?”

He kissed my forehead before I could protest and knocked.

A petite, well-dressed woman with thick makeup opened the door.

“Hey Julie. I have Emily Avery here to see you.”

“Hey darling!” She had a hint of a southern accent and a smile so big for Bash that my skin crawled.

My eyes volleyed between them and I swear I almost felt jealous of the way she watched Bash.
