You didn't trip. Someone shoved you.

I glanced around, but it was too crowded. I tried to brace my core and plant my feet so I couldn't be shoved around again. The train was bearing down, and I could see the lights. My heart rate picked up, galloping in my chest and beating a rapid tattoo against my ribs.

And then suddenly, as the train approached, the person in front of me moved out of the way, providing a clear line to the track, and I felt another hard shove. I screamed as I headed straight onto the oncoming train.

Chapter 6

GWEN

It happened so fast. Firm hands gripped me, held me steady, and then passed me to someone else. My head spun and my brain was scrambled from trying to understand what had just happened.

Someone pushed me. Someone had actually shoved me from behind, trying to make me fall onto the tracks. An icy chill wound around my spine, and my brain finally latched on. Someone had tried to kill me just now.

When I lifted my gaze, I looked at the man whose arms clung around me.And then I frowned.

"Atticus?" I breathed.

He nodded slowly as his gaze scanned my face. "Are you okay?"

All around me, the crowd intensified and I could feel all of their gazes focused on me.

"I guess. What happened?" I asked shakily.

"Don’t worry. I’ve got you." His arms tightened around me and felt like heaven. All I wanted to do was snuggle and inhale him in.

But as my brain slowly came online, I recognized the chaos of what was happening. There was an alarm blaring. The train had stopped and wasn't going anywhere. Shit. People were angry. I could hear someone complaining that they needed to get to North London and they were never going to meet their connection. Others were asking me if I was okay. One little girl was crying.

It was such a shock. I finally pushed away from Atticus’s arms.

"I can stand."

Then the cops were there. And they had questions.

I was taken to one of the security rooms near the pay point in the station. Normally, they were used to handle petty crime issues. But someone had just tried to kill me, and they needed to put me somewhere safe.

I kept my eyes planted on Atticus as he answered questions as though he were some random bystander. What was going on here?

Finally, one of the policewomen came over with a cup of tea and knelt in front of me. "How are you doing?"

"I've been better."

"Yeah, I figured. Did you notice anything unusual?"

I shook my head."It was crowded. We were all waiting for the train. Nothing unusual."

"Okay, I hear you. We'll have a look at the cameras, though it was quite crowded on the platform around that time already, yeah? And then we're going to send you home with Mr., uh…” Her voice trailed as she looked to Atticus.

He nodded at her. "Price."

"You're sending me home with him?"

Her brows dropped, and suddenly she studied Atticus closer. "He said you two were acquainted."

I released my breath slowly. "We are. I do know him. But?—"

She angled her head, studying Atticus then. "You don't feel safe with this man?"

I sighed. "I feel a little too safe. But it's fine."
