His gaze swept over me. "In case I didn't say it, you look incredible."

I glanced down at my emerald green gown. At first glance it was simple. Tiny spaghetti straps held it up in the front, but in the back they crisscrossed over and over again creating an intricate pattern. It was an elegant split style with a slit up the thigh. And when I turned just right, hidden sequins shimmered in the light. I basically looked like a giant emerald.

"Green's your color."

I shrugged. "To be fair, all jewel tones are my color."

"This is true. You do look good in everything."

I glanced from my device to his face, and my heart stopped. He was giving me that look that he used to give me. It was back now.

"Lance, what's up?"

He shook his head. "Nothing that can't wait until after we're done. Let's just table all conversations until we're done with this and things die down for a minute. But I guess I can tell you one piece of good news."

"I’d love that. Give me the good news."

"I'll be staying. I'm not going back to London."

I blinked at him rapidly. "What?"

"Yeah. I’m telling Atticus first thing tomorrow."

"Wait, so are you quitting Pendragon?"

"I don't know. I'm going to try and find a position inside the company. If you'll have me, I'll come back to your department."

I didn't like this. "Wait, you worked so hard. You were adamant you wanted to go because it was an opportunity to move up. Opportunities like that won't just be handed to you again."

He shrugged. "It doesn't matter. I think it was a mistake to leave in the first place."

That little voice, the one I’d ignored for so long, started to whisper-shout inside me again. And I wanted to stop him from saying something he couldn't take back. Something I couldn't reciprocate.

"Lance—"

My device beeped. Download complete.

"Oh thank God." I grabbed it, unplugged it from his, and shoved it back in my purse. "All right, let's go back."

When he stalked over to me, his gaze was intense. "I know you're hurting right now. But just remember, I'm always here for you. I always have been."

"I know that."

"Then let's get the data to Pierce and get this over with."

"Right."

We were back downstairs in a matter of moments. We handed the device off to Rowan just in time to see Micah and Atticus taking their positions, approaching their father.

The two of them appeared to be embroiled in some kind of tense conversation. And as I entered the ballroom, Lance went on ahead and passed the phone off to Gavin, who walked by the trio, dropping Lucian's phone at his feet.

I didn't hear their conversation. All I saw were the brothers getting in their father's face.

And then I watched, a waiter approached and tapped Lucian on the shoulder, letting him know he’d dropped his phone.

Lucian frowned, but then took his phone as I watched with relief. We'd done it. We had pulled this off. Now I just prayed that we found something useful. Otherwise, I risked the life of my heart for nothing.
