I try to contain my excitement. “I’ve so much to tell you about it all.”

I wait for her to use the bathroom, and then drag her to my room so I can tell her without the others hearing. “I slept with Rock!” I whisper.

She slaps a hand over her mouth. “Oh my god.”

“I know!”

“How? When?”

“The night before last. He had a panic attack, and I helped him get over it and we ran a bath. One thing led to another, and we did it… Oh God, Tara. He’s amazing. He’s like no guy I’ve ever been with before.”

She stares at me in utter shock. “Holy shit. You barely know the guy. What if he’s a criminal? I mean, you don’t know anything about him?”

I managed to snap a shot of him on the couch when he wasn’t looking.

She agreed he was hot, so what’s the issue now?

Tara is old fashioned and comes from a strict family. Her parents are religious, and they’ve never really let her live on her own accord, a lot like my father but without the religious aspect. I suppose in that way we’re both perfectly suited to be friends.

Except she’s very judgy. Not liking any of my boyfriends over the years is just the beginning.

“He’s not. He’s…wonderful,” I gush. “We had such a hot night. It’s not just about his body or his dick—which is amazing, by the way—but we seem to have this thing. I can’t even describe it. A connection? I guess.”

She looks like she just tasted something bad as I take in her expression. “I, I just think it’s a little too soon. You’re confusing lust with love, Aspyn. This is what you do. I’m only pointing it out because I’m your friend, and I don’t want you to get hurt again.”

My heart plummets. “I… I don’t think I do that.”

She nods. “You do, and it’s not a bad thing, on your part. You’re a giving person. You can’t be held responsible for people who want to use you for sex. Look at you. You’re amazing, who wouldn’t want to bed you? But I just don’t want you to be used.”

I feel her words, but they also sting. She’s saying Rock isn’t good enough, but she hasn’t even met him. She wouldn’t know the first thing about him.

“He’s…not like that, and I’m not being used. I’m the one who pursued him.”

She gives me a look. “You’ve slept with him how many times? Once?”

I swallow hard. She’s right in some ways. I barely know anything about Rock.

I shrug, wringing my hands. “We have a connection.” My voice sounds small. I’m holding on to it for dear life. The connection.

“Just like you did with Dylan, and the guy before that.”

I shake my head. “That’s not true. I wasn’t in love with them.”

She gapes at me as I slide onto the bed, feeling the weight of her judgment. “You’re in love with him?”

I frown. “No.” Yes. “That’s not what I meant!”

Her face softens. “I just don’t want you jumping in with both feet,” she says, sitting next to me on the bed. “That last asshole did a real number on you, and you had to pick up all the pieces and mend your broken heart. I don’t want that for you again. I just want you to be happy.”

“I am happy!” I declare.

She looks even more confused. “Your dad sent you away to a strange town to hide amongst a biker club.” She shakes her head at that. “And you’re holed up in some expensive apartment and you never go anywhere, how can you be happy?”

I shrug. “Maybe it’s because I’m away from what I know. The same four walls. The same thing day in, day out. With nobody but my housekeepers for company.”

“But it’s the same thing here. The four walls may be slightly different but, essentially, it’s the same. You’re talking like you plan on staying here?” Her expression turns horrified. “You’re best off coming home, where we can be closer and you’re around people who care about you.”

“My dad wouldn’t put me in danger.”
