Ethan nods. “We do.”

“And, you just called yourself…the Alpha…of some kind of pack?” I can’t hold in another giggle as it escapes.

Ethan’s mouth turns up in a sexy grin. “The Pinewood Pack, to be exact. Yes.”

I can’t contain my fit of giggles. “What, are you all a bunch of werewolves or something?” My laughter slowly comes to a pause, and my heart beats hard when no one says anything as silent looks are exchanged around the room.

“Ethan,” Chloe begins, “do you mind if I explain this?” Ethan’s jaw is tight as he nods for her to continue. “Olivia, this is going to be really difficult to say, and I know even harder for you to believe, but there’s something you don’t know about us. It’s not something I wanted to hide from you, but it was a matter of safety for Nick and me, our parents, and every other family that lives here.” As confused as I am right now, my heart aches for her when I see the pained look on her face. I nod my head for her to continue.

Chloe sighs. “I know you were joking before, but what if werewolves aren’t quite as fantasy as you may have thought? What if it were true, Olivia?”

I sit back in my chair, crossing my arms. “What? I don’t understand.”

“Okay, I’m just going to say it.” Chloe blows out a long breath through pursed lips. “Olivia, it’s true. Werewolves exist, and other than you, everyone in this room happens to be one.”

“What?” I laugh a borderline obnoxious cackle. The confusion must be written all over my face when looks are exchanged, but no one else laughs or says anything. “Seriously? Chloe, are you actually telling me you’re a werewolf right now? I mean, you’re joking. Right?”

She shakes her head. “It’s not a joke, Liv.”

“Chloe, please.” I roll my eyes. “Don’t be ridiculous.” I cross my arms, shaking my head.

“Olivia, please just listen to me,” Chloe pleads.

“Chloe, no. Just stop. Why are you doing this? Werewolves? What the hell is going on here?”

“I know it seems impossible, but it’s true. I’m so sorry I haven’t been truthful with you this whole time,” Chloe says through tears.

I sit forward in my chair and put my hands on her shoulders. “Chloe, werewolves aren’t real. Stop this, now.”

“Olivia, I can’t. The truth has to come out now. It’s important.”

“What truth? I think you’ve lost your fucking mind, Chloe. Stop this.” My glare moves to Ethan. “What have you done to her?”

“Olivia,” Nick’s voice reaches out to me.

“Nick, don’t start.” I stand from my chair with tears in my eyes, and stare daggers into Ethan. “You. You put them up to this. What’s your end game here, huh? What is it you want, Ethan?”

“I think I’ve been very clear, Olivia. I want you.”

“Oh, not with this again.” I shake my head and roll my eyes, unable to contain the anger reaching the surface. “What in the actualfuckmakes you think telling me you all are werewolves is somehow going to win me over? You’re delusional.” I point to Chloe and then to Nick. “And, the two of you…how could you take part in this sick game he’s playing? When my parents died you two became my family. Does that mean nothing to you?”

“Olivia, of course, it does. Nick and I love you.” Chloe sobs harder now. “I’m sorry this is such a shock, and we had to keep this part of us from you. It was truly a matter of safety,” she says through her sobs.

“If this is true, which isn’t even believable, why couldn’t you trust me? Why not tell me?”

“Your reaction right now is why. I understand it sounds crazy and unbelievable, but it’s true.”

I glare at them both with tears now rolling down my cheeks. I can’t make heads or tails out of reality right now. “This can’t be real. It’s not possible.”

“Olivia, you’re so much more like my sister than my friend, and I’m sorry, but I just…I just couldn’t?—”

“I wouldn’t let them tell you,” Ethan suddenly speaks, pulling my attention back to him. “I’m sorry this hurts you, but these decisions are made to keep our pack safe. I think you can imagine what it would be like if others in the world would find out who we really are. Look at the difficulty you’re having absorbing it all, and it’s coming from people you love.”

I shake my head in disbelief. “Pack? As in a pack of wolves? You guys, no. It’s absurd.”

“Olivia, please. You know me. I would never make up something that sounds so crazy to manipulate you. Why would I say something like this if it weren’t true?” Chloe pleads.

I sit down next to Chloe and hold my head in my hands. “I have no idea what to think right now.” I raise my head, staring an angry hole through Ethan, and ask, “So, if you’re the Alpha, you’re in charge, right?”
