The driver greets me and opens the door where I find a smiling Chloe waiting for me. “Hey, Liv. Not bad, huh?” She holds her hands in the air, showing off our surroundings.
“This is amazing,” I say. “I’m glad you were able to forgive Ethan so you could come along to help him out today.” I laugh, rolling my eyes.
“Yeah, me too.” She laughs. “Seriously though, if you’re good with him, then I’m good with him. You’re okay now, right?”
“Yes, we’re good now.”
“How was dinner with his family last night?”
I let out a long sigh. “Well, his dad is super nice and Vanessa seems great, but I’m pretty sure his mom hates me.”
“Vanessa is awesome. You’ll love her. What happened with Ethan’s mom?”
I give Chloe the whole story, including Vanessa’s and my conversation over champagne. Chloe laughs at Vanessa’s comment about Ethan being a mama’s boy. “Nick was the same way. His mom still babies him, and I’m pretty sure he loves it,” she says with a laugh.
“Then we received some interesting news regarding my transition while we were there.”
“What kind of news?”
“It turns out there’s some kind of ancient law saying because I’m a human transitioning to take a position of power in the pack, I have to be turned publicly.”
Chloe’s head whips to me. “In public, but?—”
“No sex.”
“I don’t understand. Why?”
“There are apparently a couple of old school members of the Combined Pack Council who will never agree to budge on the law. They’re holding me to it.”
“That’s ridiculous!”
“Well, it gets better. I had my appointment with Dr. Carter this morning and it turns out it’s more dangerous for a human to be turned by an Alpha because the chemistry is different, but I’ll also be at risk for my body going into shock by being turned without the benefit of physical intimacy.”
“Shit, Liv. This doesn’t sound good. Is Ethan really letting you do this?”
“Ethan is livid, and he’s insisting that we’ll find another way. We’re meeting with the Combined Pack Council tomorrow to discuss it, as well as give my statement about the night with Ian.”
“Oh, good lord. You really need this spa day,” Chloe says.
“A distraction from everything else going on will definitely be a good thing. But Chloe, if this is the only way for me to lead with Ethan, I’m going to do it. I won’t let them push me out, just like Betty tried to do the day we were shopping.”
“I can appreciate that, but Liv?—”
“Ethan talked about stepping down, Chloe. I won’t let him do that to be with me. I just…I really need your support with this.”
She nods and takes my hand. “Wow, I can’t believe he would even think about stepping down. You have my support. I’m here for you, whatever you need.”
“Thanks. I just want to forget about everything for a while and enjoy our day. Where are we going anyway?”
“Liv, you’re going to love it. There’s this amazing spa here, Rejuvenation, with gorgeous views and heavenly treatments. Ethan has arranged a full day of pampering.”
“Of course, he has.” I shake my head with a smile. “But, something tells me we won’t be getting massaged by any men today.” I laugh at how Ethan would feel about another man’s hands all over my body.
“I have a feeling you’re right,” Chloe agrees with a laugh.
We arrive at Rejuvenation and receive the full treatment including facials, massages, manicures, and pedicures, which leave us thoroughly relaxed.
“I hope whatever Ethan has planned tonight is casual because I think I’m too lazy to fix this.” I point to the mess of hair I piled on top of my head.
