“He’s not going to kill him, Liv. He’s just sending a message,” Nick says, trying to calm me down.

I’m not going to wait to find out. I approach them, stepping in as close as possible, and putting my hands on Ethan’s arm. “Ethan, look at me. Please, you have to stop. Let him go.” Ethan looks at me, then at Colin, and back to me again. “Ethan, please. Do it for me.” Growling as he bites his lower lip, he drops Colin and shoves him to the ground, leaving him coughing and gasping for air.

“You did the right thing,” I reassure him, maintaining eye contact. “Let’s go.”

We turn to leave, and Colin somehow pulls himself up to his feet and manages to speak between choking coughs. “You know what, man? You go ahead and take her. Just remember every time you bury yourself nice and deep, I was there first.”

“That’s it, motherfucker!”

“Ethan, no!”

Ethan charges at Colin, punching him straight in the face, sending Colin’s head slamming into the wall. Colin drops to the ground, out cold.

Ethan looks satisfied as he starts to walk back toward the door. “Now we can go.”

“Wait,” I plead. “We can’t just leave him here unconscious.”

“He’s no longer your concern. It’s time to go.” He takes my hand, pulling me to leave.

“We can’t just leave him here! He could die!”

We glare at each other while Nick finally makes a move to check on Colin. “Olivia, listen,” Nick says, “he’s breathing. He’s going to be okay. Now, please listen to me when I say we need to get the fuck out of here before he wakes up.”

“Fine,” I whisper, my emotions getting the better of me as the tears begin to fall. We walk out to the driveway as if we didn’t just leave a man lying unconscious in his foyer. Ethan tries to pull me to him, but I push him away. “Don’t touch me.”

“Olivia, come on. Don’t be so dramatic.”

“Dramatic? I told you to stay away! Do you have any idea what you’ve done here? He will come after you, maybe not physically, but he’ll have you thrown in jail if he can find you.”

“Fucking let him come after me then. I will never let anyone talk about you the way he did. Would you have preferred I stand there, listening to him speak about you in such a disgusting manner, and just do nothing?”

“I can’t do this right now. I’m going home.”

“We’re not done with this. I happen to think you don’t mind at all that I put him in his place.”

“There’s a difference between putting someone in their place and knocking them out cold.”

“That’s how I put men like him in their place.”

Nick snickers to himself and Chloe hushes him, “Nick, stop.”

“And Nick, why didn’t you do anything to help? You just stood there watching.”

“I told you he wasn’t going to kill him. He was just defending his mate. Listen guys, we need to get the hell out of here. He could wake up anytime.”

“Chloe, can you take me home?” I ask.

“Sure—” Chloe starts before she’s interrupted by Ethan.

“No. I’ll take you. Nick, you and Chloe can go home.”

“No, Ethan. Stay away from me! Chloe, let’s go.”

Chloe and I get in her car and I see Ethan and Nick getting into Ethan’s BMW as we drive away from the house.

“You know they’re going to follow us, right?” Chloe says, looking in the rearview mirror.

“I figured as much.”
