“What kind of bullshit is this, Olivia? You believe this?”
“I agree. It is bullshit. Are you saying that’s not you with all those women?”
“Olivia, this isn’t how it looks.” Colin draws his bottom lip in and slams the iPad down on the glass table in the foyer. He shakes his head and gestures toward Ethan. “He set this up. He wants you, so he created some elaborate scheme to take you away from me.”
Ethan leans his back against the wall and laughs. “As if I’d have to devise a scheme to take her from you. You’re right about one thing, though. I do want her. I want her more than anything I’ve ever wanted in my entire fucking life. I’ve got news for you,asshole, she’s already mine. She was mine before I even showed her how pathetic you are.”
Colin whips his head to me. “You fucking slept with him?”
“What? No!” I turn to Ethan with my hands on my hips. “Ethan?—”
“Not yet,” Ethan says, crossing the room to stand in front of me.
This is not how this was supposed to go.
“What is he talking about, Olivia? Did you cheat on me with this asshole?”
“Oh, please, Colin. You are hardly in a position to accuse me right now. Listen, this isn’t working between us anymore.”
He grabs my arm and pulls me away from Ethan. “No. This isn’t over. I don’t care if something happened. We’ll work this out.”
I take my engagement ring off my finger and set it on the table next to the iPad. “We’re done, Colin. The engagement is off.”
Colin looks at the ring, then back at me. “What do you think you’re doing? Put your fucking ring back on.”
“Don’t make this difficult, Colin.”
“Olivia, come on.” He puts his hands on my shoulders. “I’m really sorry, okay? It wasn’t planned or anything.” I shrug him off, backing away. He pulls his hands over his face then rests them on his hips. “I’ll stay out of the strip clubs, okay? And that woman…she doesn’t mean anything to me. She’s an old friend of the family. Her family is a large donor. We had a lot to drink and got carried away. I promise nothing like this will ever happen again. Now just put your fucking ring back on.” He shakes his head, biting his lower lip. “You're not breaking up with me.”
“So, you were willing to risk everything for someone who means nothing to you? You know what, to be fair, I accept part of the blame. I’ve kissed Ethan more than once since he and I met.”Colin’s eyes flash at me with anger. “Let’s just accept the truth. We’re done.”
“Do you know how it will look if you end our engagement?”
“Oh, no,” I say with my hand over my heart and my voice dripping with sarcasm.
“Are you going to give up the life I can offer you, Olivia?” He holds his arms up, looking around at the house surrounding us.
“Yes, Colin. I think I am. I’m going to go ahead and give up a life of loneliness and infidelity.”
“You’re not going to embarrass me this way. Shit like this happens.”
I hear a very low and quiet growl behind me, and I know it’s coming from Ethan.
“You did this to yourself, Colin. I’m done. This is over.”
“Fine, Olivia. You know what? Walk away. I could replace you by the end of the fucking day. All of you can get the fuck out of my house.”
“What a lucky girl she’ll be.” I sneer, rolling my eyes. “Let’s go, guys.”
We turn to walk out the front door when I hear Colin say from behind, “I know you’re doing this because of him. Bitch.”
Ethan turns around and, in about two strides, has Colin pinned up against a wall with his hand around his throat. Ethan’s face is filled with rage, while Colin’s is turning an unflattering shade of red.
“What the fuck did you call her?” Ethan growls, his face only inches away from Colin’s.
Colin is silent as his face turns purple from Ethan’s hold on his neck, but he manages to squeeze out the words, “Who said I was talking about her?” I see Ethan’s hold tighten and Colin struggles to breathe.
“Ethan, stop! Let him go, and let’s leave! Stop!” I cover my mouth with my hands. Colin’s face looks like it’s about toexplode, and Ethan isn’t about to let go. I turn to Nick, desperate for help. “Nick, he’s going to kill him! Do something!”
