“We’re on your side,” I said in a quiet voice.

“Excuse me?”

“You heard him,” said Corey. Coming to stand beside me, he slung an arm around my shoulder. “We’re on your side.”

A heavy breath escaped her. Some of the anger dissipated from her gaze. She slowly moved toward the bed and sat down on the edge.

“Why do you guys do this to me?” she asked softly. “You make me think you’re different, that I can trust you. In the end, I look like a fool and you’re laughing at me.”

“Forget what happened in the past,” I said. “No, I’m not asking you to forgive us. What we did to you...” I shook my head, remembering the day Milla left us, when everything came crashing down on us. Swallowing the lump in my throat, I continued. “Will you at least let us make it up to you?”

“Can you bring Mom back?” she asked, looking at me directly.

“If I could, I would,” I said without hesitation.

Corey moved toward the table in the corner and poured coffee into three mugs. The heavenly smell brought in a sense of peace between us.

We stayed quiet as he came forward and handed us our cups.

Milla stared into her cup. A surprised expression came over her as she looked up at Corey.

“You remember how I like my coffee?” she asked softly and took a sip.

“Milk and sugar,” said Corey and settled on a couch beside the bed. “I always listened, you know.”

I took a seat on a nearby chair and settled down with my coffee. It felt like Milla was finally giving us a chance to talk to her.

“I tried dating other girls,” Corey said from his corner. “They were beautiful. Smart. I couldn’t find a fault in them.”

“Glad to know you’ve been living a good life,” Milla muttered.

A soft chuckle escaped me. “He’s not done. Tell her, Corey.”

“They weren’t you, Milla,” he said in a sincere tone. “That’s why nothing ever worked out. I kept trying to find you in those women. You have no idea how much I missed you these past five years.”

“We didn’t even know if you were alive,” I said. “You made us live through hell.”

“Why would it matter to you guys?” Milla asked in a grim tone. “As long as I was dead, you wouldn’t have to share your daddy’s big fortune with anyone. With me gone, you could have it all to yourselves.”

“Believe it or not, even Noah doesn’t think that way,” I said. “He might not want to give up the CEO position to you but he’s never wanted you dead. He’s an ass, Milla, but he kept looking for you too.”

“That video you sent out to everyone,” Corey began. “We made sure it wasn’t spread around. Back then, Cal and I thought it was a scare tactic to keep you quiet. We didn’t know Noah would keep the video and use it to blackmail you. It was too late by the time we found out and you were gone.”

Milla silently drank her coffee without looking at either one of us.

“We still love you, Milla,” said Corey.

“Camilla Brown is dead,” Milla said in an emotionless voice. “She died the day her Mom passed away.”

Sadness washed over me. Had we really killed our sweet Milla?

“Our Milla wasn’t weak,” Corey spoke up after a while. “You ran away from us as soon as your mom died. You made sure we had nothing in our hands that we could use to blackmail you. I think you were brave, Milla. You risked everything to escape us.”

Tears filled Milla’s eyes. An ocean of sadness seemed to be trapped behind those blue orbs. Just how much did she suffer on her own these past years?

“Tell us what we can do for you,” I said in a barely controlled voice. The lump in my throat was making it painful to speak coherently. “What can we do to show you how much we care about you?”

Milla silently drank her coffee.
