The threat worked. I went still again.

“What is the point of all this?” I asked in a fear-choked voice. “Kill me if you want. Why go through this charade?”

He glanced up at me. “You’re not going to die,” he said. “Noah might but you won’t. You’re no use to me dead. Not yet, anyway.”

Men’s voices echoed all around me.

From their shouts and curses, I could tell they’d brought Noah’s injured body into this underground tunnel as well and locked him up too.

“Do what you want with me,” I said in a pleading voice. “Please, Luke. For old time’s sake, please let Noah go. I’ll be good and stay here.”

Luke chuckled. “He’s my bargaining chip. Would you be this pliable and obeying if I wasn’t holding his life in my hands?” He leaned in and caught my chin in a tight hold. “He’ll die in this shit hole if you don’t cooperate. So, be a good girl when my father comes in. Show him respect.”

I’d rather drink poison, I cursed silently. So, Daddy fucking Beckett was behind this after all.

He’d failed to destroy Amhurst Co. by using the Eastern Corridor Project, so he’d decided to use the dirtiest trick in the book.

“Where is he?” I asked him.

“He’ll be here soon. Remember, Camilla. Be respectful to him or your boyfriend suffers.”

Would Corey and Caleb realize we didn’t come home tonight?

Over the past week, the four of us always met up for a nightcap no matter how late we returned home. If we were in the mood, we’d all go to Noah’s bedroom to spend the night together.

My only hope was that Corey and Caleb would realize we weren’t coming home tonight. They were the only ones who could get us out of this mess.

How would they even know where we are?My mind questioned, taking away all hope. Cold numbness spread through my body as I realized there was a chance I’d never see them again.

The sound of approaching feet broke me out of my thoughts.

Looking up, I saw Mr. Beckett standing behind the bars. His eyes were full of malice as he gazed at me. He looked satisfied to see me bound before him.

Pushing the bars, he entered the cell.

“Good job, son,” he said appreciatively. Leaning in, he caught my chin in his hand and turned my face both ways. “Good. There’s no scratch on her.”

Confusion flickered through me. He was happy I wasn’t hurt?

“Bring those chairs over here,” he commanded.

Luke went to the corner and dragged two more chairs.

They both sat down before me.

“Let’s have a chat, Camilla,” said Mr. Beckett. His skin looked like creased parchment under the faint glow of the lone hanging bulb.

I stayed quiet, intent on hearing whether he was planning to kill me.

“I’ll admit it was a mistake to underestimate you,” he said, gazing at me with a cold, calculating look. “I’d been so fucking close to snatching the Eastern Corridor project from Amhurst Co. You messed it all up.”

“I was doing the best for my company,” I said in a clear voice. “You can’t blame me for that.”

He gave a nod. “Of course. You were doing your best.” An ugly sneer came over his aging face. “It’s time you did your best for me, bitch.”

“What exactly do you want me to do?’ I questioned him. “Why the hell am I here?”

“You’ll head over to the courthouse with my son tomorrow,” he replied. “Ahh! I almost forgot. Congratulations on becoming my daughter-in-law.”
