The tops of Beckett Mansion soon came into view. Located in the middle of a lone valley, it rose like a gigantic specter against the night sky.

Tall iron gates creaked open as the car drew nearer.

My panic rose. No idea or plan of escape had come to me yet.

The car didn’t stop in front of the house but took a turn and went around the side, stopping only when we’d reached a closed nondescript door set against the wall.

“We’re here,” he said.

He leaned in, unstrapping my seatbelt.

“Time to get out,” he said, opening the door to my side. His face was dangerously close to mine. Gazing at me with a frigid expression, he added, “Don’t even think of running.”

“I won’t run until I have Noah with me,” I replied in a low, barely audible voice. “I’ll never leave him behind.”

“How touching,” he scoffed and moved away from me.

I slowly climbed out of the car.

Even though I was following his commands, Luke still felt the need to clamp his fingers on my arm in a tight, painful grip.

Opening the door, he dragged me inside a dark corridor.

The last time I was in this house, I’d been dazzled by the wealth and opulence of the Beckett family. That’s what you see when you come in through the front gates, I realized as Luke dragged me down a narrow, shadowy hallway.

We reached another door.

Opening it, Luke led me down a winding staircase.

The sharp difference in the temperature told me we were going deep underground. My body shook from both cold and dread.

Does he want to kill us both?I wondered as panic flared inside me.

My feet stumbled.

Luke’s arm came around me at once, supporting me. “Be careful,” he said in a grim tone. “No one’s calling a doctor here tonight.”

“What are you planning to do with me?”

“Patience, Camilla.”

“Corey and Caleb won’t let you off the hook for this,” I threatened. “They’ll kill you for hurting their brother.”

Luke didn’t respond.

I was presented with the view of a long tunnel when we reached the bottom of the staircase. Small light fixtures set on the low ceiling lit up the corridor but barely. Most of the place lay concealed in shadows. The air smelled of mold.

Luke dragged me down the narrow hallway until we’d reached a room with steel bars. It looked eerily similar to a cell at a police station. A single bulb hung from the ceiling, lighting up only a small portion of the space.

A bone-rattling noise echoed all around me as Luke kicked open the gate.

Dragging me in, he shoved me into a wooden chair.

Before I could sit up straight, he was on me, binding my wrists to the armrests with thick rope.

“What are you doing?” I shouted at once, kicking at his shoulder.

“Shut up!” he roared, catching my feet and binding them up next. “Stay still or I’ll kill Noah.”
