We were already on the road, heading toward New York City.

After a moment’s silence, Noah hissed. “Stop being such pussies. Civella’s men aren’t waiting on the freeway to ambush us. I’ll text you when we get there.”

“Is it Corey?” I asked, keeping my gaze on the road.

“Yeah,” said Noah, switching off the call. “He’s losing his shit. I’m beginning to think I should’ve let him accompany you. He’s driving me mad.”

I chuckled.

“Corey and Caleb were heavily involved with a biker gang in high school and college,” said Noah in a grim tone. “Those fuckers proved to be disloyal bastards in the end. One of them screwed around with Corey’s bike that led to the accident by the library.”

“I thought Luke was responsible for it.”

“He was,” said Noah. “He paid them to mess up Corey’s bike.”

I thought of the time when Luke partnered up with me for a school project. Noah, Corey, and Caleb couldn’t stand seeing me hang out with him. Back then, I thought they were being assholes for the heck of it, but I was starting to understand them better now.

Luke even tried to approach me for a romantic relationship back then. Thinking about it now, I couldn’t believe how stupid and naïve I was.

There was no way he could’ve been interested in a dirt-poor girl like me. His sole aim had been to set me up against the Amhurst brothers. He only wanted to use me.

A cold shudder ran through me as I thought of the violent kiss he’d forced on me at the party.

“I’m glad Corey and Caleb didn’t leave me with him on the night you drenched me in rotting blood,” I said as my fingers tightened on the steering wheel. “He’d have definitely taken advantage of the situation back then.”

A heavy exhale escaped him. “I’m sorry,” he said in a low, deep voice. “I called my brothers pussy-whipped idiots for going after you that night. Guess it’s not just you that I need to make up to. They need a solid apology too. I’m the one who’s always been an idiot.”

“Corey and Caleb love you,” I said with a sideways glance. “They always have.”

“I know but I fucked everything.” The pain in his voice sent a pang through my chest. “They deserve a better brother.”

“You have the rest of your life to fix things,” I said with a gentle smile. “Just keep going the way you’re going. It’ll all be okay in the end.”

“Nothing would’ve been okay if you didn’t come back. You’re the reason we’re happy for the first time in our lives.”

Every time they said it, I felt a part of me beginning to heal.

Silence fell over us.

Mom’s words kept coming back to me. She wanted me to have a family after she was gone. Had she known I’d have a home with Noah, Corey, and Caleb?

I was finally starting to feel like I belonged somewhere.

Brian’s home finally became mine. Breakfast time became my favorite part of the day because we all gathered at the table to eat together.

I glanced at Noah who was looking out of the window. The sad expression on his beautiful face made him seem so human, my heart ached for him.

It became impossible to hate him since the day he surrendered everything to me. My suspicion remained steady until the day I took over Brian’s position officially but it was unwarranted.

Noah proved himself to me every day. He was a constant support, an ally in managing the construction business that brought the biggest chunk of income to Amhurst Co.

I was glad to have him by my side. While I showed a brave face to everyone, deep inside, I was scared to meet people like Nick Civella.

Men with power were a dangerous breed.

I hated being vulnerable in front of anyone but at times, I had to swallow my fear for the sake of my company’s interests. Amhurst Co. was mine now and I was determined to keep my father’s legacy alive and thriving.

The sky darkened as we got closer to New York City’s border.
