Dad gave a grim nod.

“What about us?” Caleb demanded, looking angry. “You expect us to hide in our offices while you guys are out there risking your lives?”

“We’re not risking anything,” said Milla. “I keep telling you guys. We’re just going to talk to the man and come home.”

“Someone needs to hold the fort while we’re gone,” I said, looking over at my brothers. “Who else can we trust? Keep an eye on things and see how the managers are reacting to Milla’s plan.”

“There are moles in the management,” Milla said in a grim tone. “I don’t like how Luke knows too many things about the inner workings of our company. You guys are a lot more approachable than Noah and me. Work your charm and find out the people who’re secretly relaying information to Luke and his father.”

“I couldn’t be prouder of my children,” Dad suddenly gasped, squeezing his eyes shut. A single tear streamed down his face.

“Brian...” Milla was on her feet and beside him at once.

Dad waved his hand.

“I just...” he couldn’t seem to get the words as he choked on his emotions.

Milla helplessly looked at us.

“We’re proud of her too,” said Corey with a grin. “Our queen doesn’t back away from a challenge. Luke and Daddy Beckett better watch their backs.”

Milla grinned and sat down in her chair. “I’m like a dog with a bone,” she said, her blue eyes glittering with a cold light. “The Eastern Corridor projecthasto happen. Luke and his dadwillpay for insulting my mom’s memory. I’ll not rest until I get what I want.”

A shiver ran through my body.

Milla was cold and brutal when it came to business.

I made the right choice, I realized. Handing over the control of the company had been the right move. Milla was fearless and a leader that everyone was going to look up to.

Even you’re going to like her, Mom, I thought in silent prayer. She’s as fanatic about keeping Amhurst Co. on top of its game as you.

A phone vibrated on the table.

Milla grabbed her cellphone and answered it. “Hey, Mal.”

There was a minute’s pause as she listened to her assistant.

“I agree to that,” said Milla. “Fix it up for me. We’ll see him tomorrow evening.”

Switching off the call, she looked at me. “Nick Civella has agreed to meet us tomorrow evening at the Tulip Inn casino in New York.”

“New York?”

She gave a nod. “There’s no way I’m missing the opportunity to talk to him even if he’s sitting at the end of a three-hour drive.”

“You guys will be completely at his mercy,” said Caleb.

“This is for the future of Amhurst Co.,” said Milla in a grim tone. “I can handle a little humiliation if needed. Civella just needs to agree to let us start construction again.”

The meeting with Nick Civella was scheduled at eight P.M. in the casino lounge of the Tulip Inn, a luxury hotel. The entire place was owned by his cousin, so it was basically his turf.

While Noah, Corey, and Caleb worried about me meeting a mobster, I was internally relieved to be able to see the man without delay. Mal deserved a bonus for finding the right connections that got me a time slot to meet the elusive mafia boss.

“We’re still on the way,” I heard Noah say into his phone.
