Soon, we were passing by bright, flashing billboards that nearly blinded me as I navigated through the city’s early evening traffic.

“I hate the traffic here,” Noah muttered. “It’s fucking annoying.”

I wasn’t a fan of the honking cars and the fume-choked air either.

It took us another half an hour to reach the front of the Tulip Inn.

I looked up at the luxurious hotel, glittering against the night sky. Two valets rushed out to greet us as soon as I stopped the car.

“This is it,” Noah whispered, gazing at me. “If you don’t want to do this, we can turn around now.”

“No way,” I said with a grin and stepped out of the car.

Smoothing the front of my dress, I waited for Noah to join me.

“We’re looking to visit the casino,” I said as a third valet approached us.

From the corner of my eye, I saw a security guard staring at us and rapidly speaking into his headset.Good, Civella’s expecting me, I thought, following the valet leading the way inside the hotel.

Noah wrapped an arm around my shoulder, subtly drawing me against him. A grim expression settled on his handsome face. He looked ready to kill someone if they got too close to me.

I barely got the time to look around the posh, glittering lobby as the valet rushed us into an elevator. To my surprise, I realized we were going down.

My heart pounded heavily, knowing I was about to meet one of the most powerful men on the East Coast. One wrong move could end both our lives.

Heavy hip-hop music thudded all around me as we stepped out of the elevator. The hotel lobby had been bright and well-lit but these underground corridors were cast in shadows with small LEDs lighting our way ahead.

“The casino’s through there,” said the valet, pointing toward a pair of solid steel doors.

“Thanks,” I said, moving forward.

Noah clasped my hand tightly as we walked down the corridor.

When we were about to push through the door I stopped.

“What’s wrong?” Noah asked, looking down at me with a grim gaze.

“No matter what happens, let me do all the talking,” I said in a rapid whisper. “Don’t aggravate the situation.”

“I’m not staying back if anyone tries to hurt you.”

I gave him an exasperated look.

“Corey and Caleb will kill me if something happens to you,” said Noah. “But they’re going to have to work with my dead body because I’ll kill myself first if something happens to you.”

“Noah!”

“I mean it,” he muttered stubbornly.

I couldn’t help but roll my eyes at him. “No one’s dying here. Just keep your mouth shut and let me do all the talking.”

“Milla,” he grated out, tightening his hold on my arm.

“And stop touching me in front of him,” I said, stepping away from him. “I don’t want him to think I brought my overbearing boyfriend to the meeting.”

“What’s wrong with letting him think that?”

A noise of frustration escaped me. Noah was usually so calm but he was letting his nerves rile up my anxiety too.
