I smile and rub my hand over my stomach. “I am, and I’m glad you’re here with me.”

“I’m not Mason, but you’re not alone.”

“Mason doesn’t deserve this moment. We do.”

Thanks to Rudi pulling in a favor, I’m checked in and shown to a room, changed into a gown, and up on the bed before I can breathe.

Rudi sits at my side and explains everything while we wait for the doctor.

“Technology is amazing, isn’t it.”

She nods. “It really is. In no time at all, you’re going to see your baby on that little screen and hear the little heartbeat. It’s truly a miracle.”

Just as she described, the doctor does everything Rudi told me she would. She’s quiet for a moment, taking down measurements and whatnot, and then she turns the screen so it’s in my line of sight.

Rudi gasps, and I frown.

“What? What do you see?” I plead to know.

She stares at the screen, and once she gets the nod, she looks back at me.

“I guess getting knocked up by a twin, you should’ve half expected to have twins yourself?”

“No! There are two babies in there?”

“Yes, you’re having twins, and they’re both healthy and both doing well,” the sonographer informs me. “I can’t quite see the sexes, but you’ll be able to find out at your next scan.”

I’m not bothered about such details. I don’t care how they come out as long as they’re healthy.

“Now, with twins, the pregnancy differs slightly from a single fetus pregnancy…” Her voice fades to nothing, and I don’t fight to zone out and listen to what she says. I can find out from Rudi later.

My earlier excitement grows, only now it’s tinged with fear. I was planning a life for one child, not two. Why didn’t I factor this possibility into the equation? It was so stupid of me not to. Mason is literally an identical twin.

“Aspen? Are you okay?” Rudi asks as the door closes.

The doctor has left.

“I’m… yeah.” I laugh. “Rudes, I’m having twins. It’s either go big or go…” I don’t finish my sentences because I can’t go home. I have to look for a new one. “Twins.” Then it dawns on me. “I’m going to get so fat!”

Rolling her eyes, she tells me, “Like you’ll care when you’re holding your babies and like you won’t get rid of it quickly chasing after two kiddies.”

It’s true enough, and deep down, I don’t care about my weight. These babies have just become my whole life. They’re the only ones who matter.

“Though we’re cousins,” Rudi says as we climb into her car. “I still want to be referred to as Auntie. Yeah?”

“Of course.”

“Auntie Rudi and Uncle Angel.”

“We’ll see how happy Uncle Angel is when I need a babysitter.”

Our laughter fills the car, and I latch onto it. That’s what I’m going to fill the babies' lives with, love and laughter.

“First on my list, I need to find a place to live.”

“It’s too quick, you’re rushing.”

“Of course, I’m rushing. I’m going to have twins in seven months. I have to be proactive.”
