“I don’t really care anymore. I’m just so happy you’re okay.” I wiped away my tears, feeling a new sense of relief wash over me.

“Me too, honey. It’s all thanks to your husband. You have a good one by your side.” My mother smiled, and I could also see how relieved she was after coming clean with the truth.

“I know.” I agreed. In the end, I was grateful that Damiano had saved my mother and kept her safe. I just didn’t appreciate the part of him making me believe she was dead.

“There’s somewhere I need to go, but I will see you later.” I let out a breath and finally rose to my feet, only to wince in pain when my stomach cramped.

“Shit! I’m taking you to the clinic now.” Damiano stormed to me while my mother was holding onto me with concern.

“What’s happening? Are you hurt?” Her voice was laced with concern. I took a deep breath and forced a smile onto my lips.

“I just found out I was pregnant…But I think I suffered another miscarriage before coming downstairs.”

My mother looked at me in pure horror.

“What?!” Antonio and Giovanni erupted at the same time, rushing to my side as well.

“And you let me sit here and babble about this?!” My mother exclaimed. “You need a doctor! I will go with you.”

“I will be fine. Besides, you have things you need to sort out with Alexei.” I said.

“No. He can wait.”

“I think he has waited long enough, mom. Don’t worry about me. I will come and see you after.” I promised, before Damiano almost went to carry me to get going.

Antonio and Giovanni practically ran out to get the car going to get us to the clinic.

“Fuck, I can’t believe I listened to you on this.” Damiano growled, angry with himself when I had to slightly lean into him for support.

“Damiano.” I stopped him and he looked at me with worry in his eyes.

“What’s wrong? Are you in a lot of pain? Let me carry you.”

“No, you can barely stand on your own.” I said, placing my hands on his cheeks and feeling the roughness of his stubble under my palms.

“Thank you for saving her.” I told him, my voice filled with gratitude. “Thank you for everything and for always coming back to me.”

His eyes softened.

“No need to thank me, my love.” He said, placing a gentle kiss on my forehead before taking my hand as we headed towards the car.

I paused before getting in when Alexei and Nestor approached us.

Alexei stood in front of me.

“I’m not sure what I’m supposed to do, but I would like to get to know you, if you’ll have me.” He said, a small crease forming between his brows, as if he were nervous about his request.

“I would love that.” I replied with a warm smile, and he returned it. Then he looked at Damiano, his expression turning serious.

“We have something that needs to be discussed. It’s about her birthright.”

“I know. I will set up a meeting.” Damiano responded, and Alexei gave a firm nod before making his way inside the house.

“Nestor?” I called after him, and he turned to look at me. “Make sure they don’t kill each other, please?” I asked with a small smile.

“That’s been my job ever since they met each other.” Nestor let out a playful sigh but promised me he would.

“Come on, let’s go.” Damiano said. I took another deep breath, preparing myself for the worst, again, as we made our way to the clinic.
