Althaia

Ellie was already at the clinic, waiting for our arrival. The closer we got to the examination room, the more my anxiety spiked. I dreaded it more than ever; the confirmation of another miscarriage.

The thought that another life might be lost was suffocating.

Damiano, Antonio, and Giovanni were just as worried. No one bothered to mask their emotions as they were concerned for my well-being and what was going to happen.

“So, what are we dealing with?” Ellie asked once she closed the door to give us some privacy while Antonio and Giovanni waited outside.

“I took a pregnancy test. It was positive, but... I’m bleeding and cramping.” I swallowed hard as Ellie listened carefully to me.

Damiano stayed close to me, his grip tight on me as if I were on the verge of collapsing.

“Okay, we will do a blood test to confirm the pregnancy, and then do a transvaginal ultrasound for a more detailed view.”

I followed her instructions and laid on the hospital bed, focusing on Damiano while she drew my blood. My thoughts swirled in a chaotic storm, and a wave of dread washed over me like never before.

My heart raced when Ellie examined me, and I had to remind myself to breathe. Damiano held my hand and caressed my head for comfort.

“Whatever happens, we’ll get through it, okay?” He whispered softly to me.

Words were stuck in my throat, unable to say anything. Instead, I nodded and tightly clung to his hand, feeling as though time was stretching endlessly, while I struggled desperately to hold back tears.

“Oh.” Ellie suddenly said, causing both of us to immediately turn our attention to her. Her brows were slightly furrowed as she focused on the screen.

“What is it, Ellie?” Damiano asked, his anxiety mirroring my own.

“Well - actually, you should see for yourselves.” She turned the screen around to show us.

I let out a shocked gasp.

“Everything is fine.” She smiled.

“But what about the bleeding and cramping?” I stumbled on my words, afraid to get my hopes up in case it was a false alarm.

“You have nothing to worry about. What you’re experiencing is implantation bleeding, which is normal. The cramping is due to hormonal changes as your womb is preparing itself.” Ellie explained.

“Everything is okay, then?” Tears had already welled up in my eyes as I asked once more, just to be sure.

Ellie’s face lit up with a genuine and warm smile.

“Everything is absolutely fine. Congratulations, guys! You’re going to be parents.” She beamed.

I covered my face with my hands, sobbing at the news as Damiano wrapped his arms around me.

“I’ll give you a moment alone.” Ellie said, before I heard her exit the room.

I looked at Damiano, smiling through my tears.

He cupped my face in his hands, his golden-brown eyes sparkled with happiness as he gazed into mine.

“We’re having a baby.” Damiano whispered, his voice filled with wonder and love. His thumbs brushed away the tears that had gathered in the corners of my eyes.

He pressed his lips to mine, pouring all the emotions we had been holding back; relief, happiness, and the assurance that our future was bright with the promise of a new life.

“I love you, piccola. I love you so much.” Damiano murmured between kisses, making me smile against his lips.
