“Anything I can help with?”

Theo gives me a skeptical look and shakes his head. “No.”

And here we go again.

I love this man, and while I can understand where he is coming from, I still wish I could slap some sense into him.

“Then I will leave you to it.”

I head to the kitchen to grab a snack and then do just that, heading upstairs to put some space between Theo and me for him to work in peace and to prevent me from getting close to bashing his head in.

Later that afternoon Theo calls me to the dining room where Kiril and Paval are both seated.

I walk over on shaky legs and take a seat opposite him. “What’s going on?”

“You tell us,” Paval says with a sneer.

I pin Paval with a look. Of all Theo’s siblings, I like him the least. It is no secret he does not like me; it is not something he has made much effort to hide. But I have just about had it with his shitty attitude.

“I wasn’t asking you. I was asking my husband.”

The chair screeches across the floor as Paval shoots up. “When I ask the questions, you will talk to me!”

Theo points a finger at Paval. “You, sit. You’re just making things worse.”

Paval growls his annoyance, but a second look from Theo has him sinking into his chair, pouting like a child.

“Kat.” Theo draws my attention back to him. “Kiril found something when he was digging into the threats.”

My heart rate kicks up. I am not sure what he could have found that involves me, but from the tone of Theo’s voice, it can’t be good.

“What did you find?”

Theo looks at Kiril, who nods.

“It seems like your father is the one who has been rallying the other families.”

I blink a few times. “What? That can’t be right.”

Not after he agreed to a ceasefire. I do not believe my father is by any means a man of his word, but I had thought that making a promise to a mafia man who could end his life if he truly wanted to would hold some weight. My father knows he can’t win a war against the Dubrovs, and he would make an enemy out of everyone loyal to them. But it would seem he might have found a way around that.

Kiril nods. “It is true. The communication we stumbled on leaves very little for interpretation.”

“That’s not all,” Theo adds.

I look at him, my head spinning.

“It seems like word got out about your cousin being here. She was mentioned in some of the messages.” Theo exhales sharply. “They called her a traitor.”

My vision swirls, and I feel bile rising in my throat. “Is she in danger?”

“That part is still unclear. We couldn’t find any evidence that they are planning on harming her, but we can’t be sure.”

I did this.

I reached out to her and asked her to come. I knew she would be there to support me no matter what because she had been given more liberties than me and had not been bound to the mafia world the way I had, so she did not feel the same way about forming bonds for business gains. She believes in love. Which is why she ended up with her husband, who is not part of our world in any way. He is a dentist. Although he makes over six figures a year, which is probably why her father agreed to it. That and the family all have perfect teeth now.

“You have to protect her.”
