Before Theo has a chance to answer, Paval jumps up again. “For all we know this was all part of the plan!”

My emotions at an all-time high, I stand and slam my palms down on the table. “Get off your high horse, Paval! Do you honestly think I would plan to put my cousin in danger?”

Paval waves a hand and addresses his brothers. “That is just it. though, we don’t know that she is actually in danger. We just saw them mention her. For all we know it could be a ploy to divert more manpower away from where we need it, so they have a chance to move in and do their damage.”

“When are you going to stop slinging this shit?” I shout. “I’m trying my best to be patient, but every time you open your mouth you make me want to punch you in the face a little more.”

Out of the corner of my eye, I see Theo’s lip twitch.

Paval’s face turns red, the vein on his temple standing out. “I should have turned you away the day you walked into the club!”

This makes Theo stand up. “Stop it, both of you.” He turns to Paval, pointing at the chair. “For the last time, sit down.” Looking at me, he nods. “You too, please.”

Paval and I comply, sinking into our respective seats. Theo stands with one hand on his hip, the other one scrubbing over his face. “Whether we like it or not, we are in this together.”

Kiril, who has been strangely quiet through the spectacle, nods. “Agreed.”

When Theo looks at me again, I lean forward in my chair. “You have to keep her safe, please.”

Theo’s jaw ticks, his breathing even as he mulls this over.

“Please,” I plead.

Kiril clears his throat. “Even if we wanted to, we can’t spare the manpower, Fyodor.”

Theo looks at him, and Kiril continues. “They are in another city, and to have men posted there would mean we would lose valuable men that we need here, especially now.”

Sighing, Theo shakes his head. “Kiril is right, we can’t spare the men.”

“Then bring them here. They would be safe here, wouldn’t they?” I ask.

At this point, I am willing to live with any arrangements we can make to keep Natalya safe. She did not ask for this, and she kept herself out of this world for a reason. It is not her fault she got dragged back in.

“Bring more enemies into Fyodor’s home?” Paval asks as he looks at me. “Seems rather convenient for you, doesn’t it?”

“Paval,” Theo warns.

“What?” he barks. “I can’t be the only one thinking it. First, you promised not to harm Igor, and now this?”

Theo’s eyes shoot to Paval.

“Didn’t think I knew about that, did you?”

When Theo turns his attention to Kiril, he raises his hands in surrender. “Don’t look at me, I didn’t say anything. Word travels.”

“And I still have a bone to pick with you about that,” Paval interjects.

“Better get in line,” Kiril mutters.

“Whatever your thoughts on the matter, it still stands,” Theo says.

Paval gives Theo an incredulous look. “How sure are you that they actually are in danger? We don’t even know if they support this union to begin with. Igor sure as hell doesn’t. They could be part of this whole scheme.”

“Natalya does not want any part in the mafia. She cut all ties with it years ago.”

Paval rolls his eyes. “You’ll have to forgive me if I find that hard to believe.”

“Fyodor,” Kiril says, his eyes darting between Paval and me. “I hate to admit it, but Paval does have a point.”
