At some point, Chef Morris brought my lunch—and Shane’s. Apparently, he hadn’t eaten yet because he wanted to wait for me. I napped some more, and then later in the afternoon, Thea and Almae came in to check on me.

“I can feel your energy levels draining away,” Almae said. “Like there’s a leak on your gas tank.”

That wasn’t good. “Are you saying I’m dying faster?”

Almae and Thea exchanged a dark look. “We can’t say for sure, maybe Kaz can,” Thea said. “But we know the last burst burned through a lot of your energy and the dragon’s magic is taking over.”

I sucked in a sharp breath. “Will I be able to do what I have to tomorrow?”

“We hope so,” Almae said. “Kaz is helping us make an elixir to give you a burst of energy for when the time comes.”

Shane stiffened beside me. “Won’t that burn through her energy faster later?”

“It might,” Thea said. She looked at me. “It’s a risk and a choice only you can make.”

Almae patted my leg. “You should focus on resting. We’ll come check on you later.”

The two of them headed to the door, when it opened suddenly and Killian rushed in.

“Here you are,” he said, his grave eyes on Thea. “Drake is looking for you.”

Thea rushed out at once, and Almae followed her.

Killian turned to us, his eyes grave. “Shane, we might need your help.”

Shane stood from the bed. “What is it?”

“Paimon started a full attack on one of the gates.”

The blood rushed from my face. “What?”

“We need every hand we can get,” Killian said.

Shane looked at me.

“Wait for me.” I scooted to the edge of the bed and as I sat up, a wave of dizziness assaulted me.

Shane held my arm. “You can’t go, Raika. You’re too weak.”

“But I have to! If this is it, then I have to be there!”

“Raika,” Killian started, his voice low. “I actually have orders from Lord Drake. You’re to stay here and rest. In a couple of hours, someone will come back to check on you. If by then you’re feeling better, then you can join us.”

I stared at Shane and Killian. “Drake isn’t my alpha. I don’t have to listen to him.” I pushed from the bed. Instantly, my knees wobbled and my vision darkened.

Shane picked me up before I kissed the ground. He deposited me in bed. “Raika, Drake is right. You need to stay and rest.” I looked at him, at his pleading eyes. “Please, stay. Rest.”

I punched his shoulder. “You can’t do this to me. I need to be there.”

“You’ll only get yourself killed faster.” He pointed to the floor. “Didn’t you see what happened? You can barely stand on your own.” He grabbed my nape and rested his forehead on mine. “Please, stay. Don’t make me use my alpha command on you.”

I gasped. “You wouldn’t.”

“To keep you safe? Yes, I would.” I grabbed his wrist. “I’ll come back in a couple of hours, okay? Just … stay here.” He pressed a kiss to my forehead, then rushed out of the room. Killian was gone half a second later with his damn vampire speed.

And I was left alone in the infirmary like an invalid.
