I groaned and rolled in bed.

But this wasn’t my bed.

I sat up, confused for a second. My head spun and I was out of breath. Then it all came back to me—the training, the fire wolf, losing control, and Kaz running toward me.

“How are you feeling?” Shane asked. I turned to my right. There he was, seated on a chair beside my bed at the infirmary, his face worn and relieved.

I thought for a second. “Weak, dizzy, a little nauseous.”

He nodded. “I was told you might feel like that when you woke up.”

“What about Kaz? He threw himself at me!”

“I’m fine,” Kaz said from the left. He was several feet away, beside the window. The sunlight streaking through the glass gave him a golden shine. He stepped closer. “I shifted and shielded you with my wings. The explosion was contained and no one got hurt.”

“Thea is fine?”

Kaz nodded. “Yeah. She was here until a few minutes ago. She and I examined you, made sure you’re all right, then she left to talk to some witches.”

“Good,” I whispered. Though I didn’t feel well. I had finally found something I could fight Paimon with and I had lost control. This sucked big time. “How long have I been out?”

“A couple of hours,” Kaz answered. “It’s past lunchtime, actually, and Chef Morris asked me to tell him when you’re awake, so …” He gestured to the door. He marched out without another word or glance back.

I stilled in bed.

Shane stood and held my hand in his. “Kaz told me about the fire wolf. That probably looks incredible.”

I frowned. He had walked out on me this morning. I didn’t expect anything less from my mate, but shouldn’t we talk about us before anything else?

I pulled my hand from his. “You walked out on me again.”

He groaned. “I know, and I feel like a jerk.”

“You were a jerk.”

“I know. I have no fucking excuse. I got mad you went behind my back and planned everything with Drake without telling me about it.”

“It was a sudden thing. I didn’t plan on it. I just … had the idea and went after Drake right then. And then …” Shit, I was partly responsible here, wasn’t I? “I didn’t tell you last night because I wanted to enjoy the barbecue with you instead of arguing and agonizing about what might happen.” This time, I reached for his hand and he let me have it. “I’m sorry. It’s my fault too.”

“It’s okay.” He leaned into me and pressed a kiss to my forehead. “We’re fine, Raika. I might get mad sometimes, and you might be too impulsive, but we’re fine, aren’t we? Our love is stronger than that.”

“Damn right,” I whispered.

He brought his lips to mine in a soft, barely there kiss. I wanted to hold on to him, to ask for more, but I was too damn tired for that. This last explosion had taken a lot out of me.

I scooted to the side and Shane sat down beside me. He leaned on the headboard, his arm wide to the side, and I lay back, half on his chest, half on his arm.

“What now? I’m supposed to stay in bed for how long?” I asked.

“Thea said she would come back and check on you later, but from the quick exam she did, she thought you would be spent the rest of the day.” He looked down at me. “Are you?”

I sighed. “I am.” I nestled my head on his shoulder. “I might take a nap right here.”

He chuckled. “I’m your personal pillow, blanket, mattress, whatever you need.”

I turned more to him, my face on his neck, his musk and mint scent in my nostrils. I was so tired, I could sleep for a thousand years like this.
